  • Marriage: He was married.
  • Death: He died in 1856 in Fort Madison, Lee, Iowa, United StatesBGO.6
  • Name: Barnabas Lowell was also known as Barnabas Willard Lowell.
  • Story:

Searches of Story County History has shed much light on this individual. The city of Nevada was laid out in August 1853 and selected as the county seat, and Barnabas Lowell was one of the early settlers of this community, arriving sometime before November of 1852, because during that month, an individual by the name of Judiah Ray and his wife were looking for the cabin of a Sam McDaniel. As they approached the Indian Creek timber, they could see the smoke of the McDaniel cabin, when they crossed paths with Barnabas, a "man of uncouth and forbidding aspect." On being told they were looking for McDaniel's place, Barnabas informed them that his family occupied one of the apartments of the McDaniel cabins and he would guide them there. Mr. Ray found Barnabas "so disagreeable." When the Rays reached the cabins, they found a number of very rough individuals gathered around a fire playing cards and drinking whisky far into the night. The Rays declined the hospitalities of the cabins, preferring instead to stay in their wagon.

Barnabas lived in one of the two contiguous cabins on the claim of Samuel McDaniel in November of 1852, but by April of 1853 had set up for himself in a cabin which he had built about a half mile farther north. The cabin consisted of a house of logs with a shed-room on one side and a door between the two apartments.

Probably in June, but could also have been May, of 1853, Mrs. Lowell had died under strange circumstances. Within a few days, the neighbors determined to have the body exhumed and examined by physicians after further investigations and disclosure by the older children that their mother and a former wife of Barnabas had died similarly in Ohio. Barnabas was arraigned and threatened those who would testify against him. He was reputed in the area to have been a pirate on the high seas in his earlier years, carrying a weapon like a sword in a sheath on his leg. He was later tried and found guilty of his wife's murder and sentenced to the state penitentiary in Fort Madison, where he died three years later.7
