Story
A great grand-daughter, Sarah Carpenter Benedict said before she died in 1938, that she was not yet three years of age when Andrew Roush died. This would make his date of death in 1871. The notice of his death was in a paper at Hastings, Michigan.
Andrew Roush was the eldest son of John George and Christina (Morr) Roush, of Freesburg, then in Northumberland County, Pa.
He left his home place and went to Ohio near Toledo it was said. John brother, also went to Ohio, and settled probably near Andew, and John, and his brother is buried at Whitehouse, Lucas County, Ohio. George another older a sister Margaret, who married George Shellenberger, and moved to Ohio.
Andrew and the brothers, were accustomed to visit the home place, going on horseback, and then the visits ceased, and the descendants living at Freeburg do not know of his marriage, or if he raised a family.
It is believed by some of the descendants in Ohio, that Andrew is buried in Pennsylvania while others believe that he died at the home of his son Michael, at or near Hastings and is buried in the Carleton Cemetey.
Presented by Mrs. Chester Bauman, Jackson, Mich., and Harold and Beryl Roush.
Andew Roush married Catherine Shenk, born in 1777, and died Aug. 2, 1849, aged 71 years and 3 months. She is buried in Trinity Cemetery, Scott Township, Sandusky County, Ohio. This cemetery is close to the old homestead of her oldest son John.
Family tradition says that Andrew and wife lived in Virginia for a time, but was living in Pennsylvania when their eldest son, John, was born in 1799 or 1801. They went to Ohio before the last two children were born. The record of the purchase of land by Andrew Roush was found recently by Ernest W. Roush, Lindsey, Sanduskey Co., Ohio. This purchase of land was for 80 acres from the U. S. Sept. 16, 1834, in the same section as the cemetery is located. The sale of the same 80 acres to Michael Roush, by Andrew and Catherine Roush, was on June 4, 1844. A later sale of part of this land by John Roush, and Mary Magdalene Roush to John Stohl, date March 20, 1865.
This John Roush is the great grandfather of Samuel H. Roush living 3 miles west of the cemetery to which John Roush lived close. Samuel H. knew about John Roush and his children but knew nothing about Andrew Roush.
Children of Andrew and Catherine (Shenk) Roush were: Christine, John, Philip, Thomas, George, William, Conrad, Catherine, and twin brothers, Michael and Andrew.
