• Story:
  On October 28, 1937, 16-year-old Merle was severely injured when his bicycle was hit by a nine-ton truck trailer. He was taken to the hospitals uffering from shock, a lacerated head, and a wrenched left arm. Prior to this accident, Merle was a swimmer on the East High School swimming squad. The accident happened in front of 2719 E. Fourteenth Street. This was less than a mile from where his brother Robert was killed the previous year when an automobile struck a motorcycle he was riding.
  
  Merle graduated from East High School in 1939 and entered the Navy on 5 Jan 1942. Prior to his enlistment, he was employed by the Gibbs-Cook Tractor and Equipment Company in Des Moines as a repairman. He completed his boot camp in March 1942 and immediately volunteered for sea service with a gun crew aboard a merchant ship.
  
  The Des Moines Tribune of 14 Dec. 1942 tells of his heroic rescue of 33 men from shark-infested waters and his previous rescue of "quite a few." The parents of Merle, Mr. and Mrs. Frank See of 3848 East Douglas Avenue received a letter from a shipmate, Daniel S. (Pops) Kenny, a veteran of 30 years at sea, telling of his heroic rescues. "We were sunk in the black of night," wrote Kenny, "and all lifeboars were missing. Merle aided in the righting of a couple of capsized lifeboas, which saved quite a few men, although 11 were lost, including three gunners." Mr. Kenny said that incident was merely a warmup for what was to follow. "The telltale trail of a torpedo must have barely disappered in the vicinity of another ship, when the Des Moines gunner again went into action. The occupants of another capsized lifeboat were struggling in the water, surrounded by sharks. See volunteered to attempt their rescue, was told by the ship's second officer that such an accomplishment was impossible. The hell it is the gunner replied, according to Kenny. He calmly swam among hundreds of sharks, uprighted the lifeboat, and 33 men were saved, Kenny wrote See's parents. I reported it all to the United States naval intelligence, Kenny continued, and as I have more than 30 years of service, I trust and believe something will come of it. I am old enough, and proud, to have had your very fine son call me "Pops" for over five months."
  
  Mr. Kenny's report to the United States naval intelligence was not overlooked. The Des Moines Tribune on 18 Nov 1944 reported that the navy department Saturday [XX Nov 1944] announced awards and commendations to five Iowans for braverly and for wounds suffered in action. Included was "Commendation to Merle E. See, Des Moines, for braverly on the sinking of the SS Zaandam Nov 2, 1942.^1,4,5
