Parents

  • Note
Pete was a tall grown-up boy when he started to school in South Dakota. The teacher put him in the second grade the first day because he could not speak English. The children of Pete's age laughed about that and they laughed at him. But they didn't laugh for long because in a few weeks Pete had caught up with the rest of them and was put in the same class as those who had laughed at him.

Pete was an employee of the Thompson Company in Vermillion, which resulted in a trusted and binding friendship with the entire Thompson relationships.

Olga, as well as all her immediate family, passed away prematurely of the then fatal disease tuberculosis. Pete contacted the active disease and spent many years in various parts of the South in a futile attempt to regain his health. The last year and a half were spent in the parents home under the care of his "mother" (really step-mother), his father, Jorgen Nielsen, having passed away in 1901.

Pete's presence in the home left an impact on the younger children there. His friends from Vermillion repeatedly called on him, and all enjoyed the fellowship and hospitality of the farm home. Many evenings were spent with Pete telling stories and entertaining on the accordion. Memorable is the time when he cheered the weary threshers when they had finished the long run at Mrs. Jorgen Nelson's with two barrels of cold beer. He drove with the horse Florry and buggy nine miles to Wakonda to bring this surprise to the men on that Saturday evening.

Parents

  • Name Jens Christian Jorgenson
  • Note
World War 1 Draft Registration Card has middle name as Christian, and this is how he signed the card.

Chris was employed in Vermillion at Lee & Prentiss ranch and at Iverson Hardware Store. Later he bought 160 acres of land in Riverside Township, Clay County and was actively engaged in farming. He was on the local school board, and he had a life-long interest in politics. After a long bout with pneumonia, he was advised to move to a warmer climate. He and Gertie sold their personal and household things on a public auction and the farm was later sold. It was about 1917 when they moved to Fresno, California, where Gertie's mother and sisters lived. Here Chris traveled much in connection with his work of selling fruit crate boxes. He thus became well acquainted with California, and thoroughly enjoyed showing friends and relatives about the state.
