  Kenneth A. Petersen was born September 25, 1923 in rural Irene, South Dakota to John and Gina (Eide) Petersen. He grew up on the farm and attended Clay Valley Country School in rural Irene. After finishing school, Kenneth worked as a hired man for many area farmers, until he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served his country during World War II. After the war, Kenneth returned to Yankton County and started farming on his own just north of Mission Hill, South Dakota. He married Jane VanOsdel on June 12, 1949 in Gayville, South Dakota. Kenneth continued farming in the Mission Hill and Irene areas and began working as a mechanic for C.H. Gunderson & Sons in Irene, Kenny Rye's in Irene, and later Odens Implement in Vermillion. Kenneth retired in 1998 and he and Jane moved to Gayville that year. Even though Kenneth was working as a mechanic, he was always a farmer and continued to farm his entire life.
  
  Kenneth was a member of Vangen Lutheran Church where he ushered for several years, Gayville Lutheran Church, and the Rudolph-Christensen American Legion Post No. 237. He loved being outdoors and fishing. He was very patient and loved working as a mechanic. He could fix anything. He loved being with his family, whether it was playing pinochle or having his coffee and cookie. Kenneth was truly the foundation of his family and they always knew he would be there to support them.
  
  Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Jane Petersen of Gayville; three children: Carolyn Burgod of Ipswich, South Dakota; Cathy Burke (Robin Keller) of Sacramento, California; and Mike Petersen of Gayville; four grandchildren: Courtney Burgod, Danielle Petersen, Jonathan Petersen (Olivia Orwig), and Tad Petersen; two brothers: Johnny and Clifford Petersen of Yankton; two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Petersen and Dolores VanOsdel; as well as many nieces and nephews.
  
  He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Grace Johnson and Eilene VanOsdel; and two brothers: Melvin and Orlin Petersen.
