  Nels, Anna, and their two youngest children moved to Vancouver, Washington, where Nels continued his trade of carpentry. After Nels passed away from a long illness, Maria continued to live in Vancouver, and her son Peter lived with her. In the fall of 1968 when Sanna prepared her update, Pete was planning a trip to Denmark and relatives and friends in South Dakota were looking forward to a visit from Maria.

• Emigration: He emigrated in April 1912 from Southhampton, Southampton, Hampshire, EnglandBGO. Nels, Maria, their two oldest children, and Nels' sister Kathrine migrated to South Dakota in April 1912. Nels, who had been in America before and could speak English, wished they would come on the Titanic, the new White Star liner on her maiden voyage from Southhampton to New York. Maria and Kathrine, however, could not speak English and persisted that they come on the Helig Olaf of the Scandinavian American Line. The Helig Olaf hit an iceberg and was delayed some days on the ocean in being repaired; but the Titanic, which was the ship nearest the Helig Olaf, did not reach port. Of the 2207 passengers and crew on the Titanic, 1517 lives were lost which included 103 women and 53 children. The Nelsons did not learn of the terrible disaster until they reached port in New York.¹
