Daniel Axtell1,2

M, #1281, b. 4 November 1673, d. 4 January 1735

Parents

Family: Thankful Pratt (b. 4 October 1683, d. 28 September 1749)

Biography

  • Birth: Daniel Axtell was born on 4 November 1673 in Marlboro, Essex, Massachusetts, United StatesBGO.3,4,5,2,6
  • Marriage: He and Thankful Pratt were married on 12 May 1702.4,2,7
  • Death: He died on 4 January 1735, at age 61, in Bristol, Massachusetts, United StatesBGO.8,9,2
  • Note: Shortly after Daniel's birth, the settlement of Marlborough was almost destroyed by Native Americans in 1676 during the King Phillip's War. Daniel's father, Henry Axtell, was killed during this war in Sudbury, Massachusetts.

In 1695 Elder William Pratt organized a church in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and soon after went to South Carolina to plant his church there as a missionary colony. In his diary he records a very hospitable reception by Lady Axtell, widow of Landgrave Daniel Axtell, who went from England to South Carolina about 1680. Probably Daniel Axtell of Massachusetts accompanied Mr. Pratt on one of his earlier voyages to South Carolina. On May 12, 1702, he married Thankful, the daughter of Elder Pratt, and lived in South Carolina until about 1707, when he returned to Massachusetts and settled in "that part of Bridgewater which afterward became Abbington." He bought one-half of the "Briggs grant" (by Plymouth County in 1664). On January 30, 1712, he sold his farm and moved to Taunton, that part which afterward became Dighton or Berkley.

A release dated March 16, 1703, from Daniel of South Carolina, County of Bartley on the Ashley River, made out in favor of his brother Thomas of Massachusetts, establishes a relationship between the two. Lady Axtell in her will of April 5, 1720, says, "I give unto my kinsman Daniel Axtell of New England three hundred (300) acres of land and to his son Daniel two hundred (200) acres." This establishes a relationship between the two families. Daniel died in January 1735. Sometime later (the exact date is unknown) finds the widow, Thankful, in New Jersey, as will be seen by her will. "WILL of Thankful Axtell of Mendham, Morris Co., N.J.; widow:--children: Ebenezer, deceased son Thomas, Thankful Briggs, and Rebecca Cook; Grandchildren: Daniel, son of Thomas and Hannah, his wife, their expected child, and Ichabod Edmister. Witness--William Axtell, Henry Axtell, Brice Relsy. Proved: Sept. 28, 1749."9,10

Parents

Family: Hannah Merriam (b. 14 July 1645, d. 1682)

Axtel Henry 1641-1676 Sudbury

Biography

  • Birth: Henry Axtell was born in 1641 in Herefordshire, EnglandBG.2,3,4
  • Marriage: He and Hannah Merriam were married on 14 June 1665 in Marlboro, Essex, Massachusetts, United StatesBGO, Compiled by Charles Henry Pope, Merriam Genealogy in England and America (Boston, Mass.: Charles H. Pope, 1906), 38.5,6,4,7
  • Death: He died on 21 April 1676, at age ~35, in Sudbury, Middlesex, Province of Massachusetts Bay, Colonial AmericaBGO.2,3
  • Note: See reference under Thomas Axtell, b. ABT January 26, 1619.

Henry was a boy of five when his father died. In 1660 a tract of land lying west of Sudbury was incorporated as a town by the name of Marlborough. Edmond Rice was a prime mover in the formation of the new town. Henry Axtell, then only nineteen, became one of the proprietors and received fifteen acres of land in the central part of the town as his portion for what was called "a house lot." Besides this, he probably had a portion of meadow and other out-lying land. On June 14, 1665, he married Hannah, the daughter of George and Susan Merriam who came from Kent, England in the ship "Castle" in 1638.

In the spring of 1676 the Indians, led by King Phillip of Mount Hope, Rhode Island, made a general war on the white settlements. They attacked several of the smaller places in the interior of Massachusetts and killed many of the settlers; among those from Marlborough was Henry Axtell.

One account states he was killed within a couple weeks of the town being attacked as he worked in his fields, other accounts place him in or near Sudbury around April 19-21, 1676. What is sure is that Henry Axtell died among many others and was buried in an unmarked grave near Wadsworth cemetery where 29 soldiers were also buried and a memorial to those who died during those attacks stands today.

The bridge was located a short distance north of the present bridge carrying Old Sudbury Road over the Sudbury River. The Native American attackers used this bridge to attack the east side of Sudbury (the present Town of Wayland). The more heavily populated eastern part of Sudbury was defended by the bulk of the eighty-man Sudbury militia.

The militia would have been active in protecting the fortified church/meeting house near the bridge since it was the principal Town storehouse for emergency supplies of guns, shot, and gunpowder, and it also served as a place of refuge for civilians at times of attack.

The militia was able to protect the east-side civilians and some of their property, but they did not have sufficient manpower to force the Native American attackers back across the bridge.

The roughly 200 hostile Native Americans did not go long distances from the bridge during their destructive raids on the eastern side of the river, since they needed to be able to retreat quickly back to the western part of Town if major military assistance from other Towns arrived.

However, some structures in the far western part of what is now the Town of Weston were burned by the hostile Native Americans.

A group of soldiers from Watertown did arrive in the middle of the day, and the combined force of these soldiers and the Sudbury militia was able to drive the hostile Native Americans back across the bridge into the western part of the Town.

  • Story:

Henry Axtell was killed during King Philip's War in 1676 in Sudbury, Massachusetts. One account states he was killed within a couple weeks of the town being attacked as he worked in his fields, other accounts place him in or near Sudbury around 19-21 Apr 1676.

[HENRY AXTELL Posted 02 Jun 2010 by 12mamamoo at Ancestry.com]

Henry AXTELL was born about 15 Oct 1641 in Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England. Died about Mar 1676 in MA. b. in England and christened in Berkhamstead on October 15, 1641. He was a boy of five when his father died. In 1660 a tract of land lying west of Sudbury was incorporated as a town by th name of Marlboro. Edmond Rice, before mentioned, was a prime mover in the formation of the new town. Henry Axtell, then only nineteen, became one of the proprietors and received fifteen acres of land in the central part of the town as his portion for what was called "a house lot." Besides this, he probably had a portion of meadow and other out-lying land. On June 14, 1665, he married Hannah, the daughter of George and Susan Merriam who came from Kent, England, in the ship "Castle" in 1638. She was born in Concord, Massachusetts, July 14, 1645. In the spring of 1676 the Indians, led by King Phillip of Mount Hope, Rhode Island, made a general war on the white settlements. They attacked several of the smaller places in the interior of Massachusetts and killed many of the settlers; among those from Marlboro was Henry Axtell.

The inventory of his property is dated April 1, 1676. The famous Sudbury fight, when the captain and his men were caught in ambush by the Indians and many of them were slain, took place three weeks after the death of Henry Axtell. His widow married Will Taylor July 16, 1677. He married Hannah MERRIAM on 14 Jun 1665. Hannah MERRIAM was
born on 14 Jul 1645 in Concord, MA.12

GEORGE2 (William1), born in England, date and place not yet learned, but not far from the year 1603; married at Turnbridge, Kent, 16 October 1627, Susan (Susanna) Raven, and resided there till 1637, certainly, perhaps till the time of his removal to New England. The first trace of his presence in this country is after the death of Joseph. He was admitted to freemanship 2 June, 1641, and must have been here some time before to become a member of the church, which was then a prerequisite to freemanship; but the fact that he was not one of the overseers of Joseph's will looks as if he was not in the plantation at that date.

Among the "Feet of Fines" or deeds of land in the county of Kent, A.D. 1638, Easter term, Charles I., is a conveyance by "George Mirriam and Susanna his wife" of "Two messuages, two barns, two gardens, two orchards, and six acres of land in Tewdley, co. Kent," to "Ann Towne, widow."

He made his home in Concord, where several children were born in addition to those registered at Tunbridge. Death had invaded the ranks, however, and we find names repeated. He died 29 December, 1675, leaving his will.2

Biography

  • Birth: Thomas Axtell was born about 26 January 1619 in Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, EnglandBGO.2
  • Marriage: He and Mary Starr were married about 1638.3,4
  • Death: He died in March 1646, at age ~27, in Sudbury, Middlesex, Province of Massachusetts Bay, Colonial AmericaBGO.5,6,2,7,4
  • Note: Two children were born to this couple in England and their baptism is recorded in St. Peter's. Thomas and Mary, with two children, immigrated from England and are the progenitors of possibly all American Axtells. (They had only one son, Henry, so he and his wife, Hannah Merriam, are also progenitors of American Axtells.) The early Axtells were frontier subsistence farmers.

They left England as early as 1643, for in October of that year, Thomas purchased five acres of land in Sudbury, Massachusetts, of Edmond Rice, who himself had come from Berkhamstead five years earlier. This land is described as "lying in ye south part of ye town-bounds, the southwest side lying to the commons and joined to the land of Edmond Rice, southward and northward to the highway leading from Sudbury to Mr. Duston's farm." This is what is now Wayland near "The Five Paths." This land was wilderness about 20 miles west of Boston. Other settlers from their hometown in England also settled in this area.

Thomas took the oath of fidelity July 8, 1645.

The following is the inventory of Thomas Axtell of Sudbury, lately deceased,

    Imprimi:
His land and house 8L 10s
    Cattle 8L 10s
Wearing apparel and bedding with his arms 10L
    Brass and pewter 5L

Edmond Rice bought back the land, six acres, and dwelling house. This was near the spring.

The story told in those words is short, indeed, but we are permitted to see what it stands for. The young Englishman was a soldier or at least trained to arms; he was of strong puritanical leanings, like his brother Daniel the regicide. With his wife and two little ones he followed his neighbor across the sea to make his home in a frontier settlement of New England. Scarcely had he set up his rooftree in the wilderness when hardships and exposure struck him down.

With his last breath he leaves his little all for the helpless group about his death bed. Mary, the widow of Thomas, appears to have married John Maynard, a widower with a boy of eight, on June 16, 1646.

Thomas and Mary's reasons for immigration are not recorded, but religious/political refuge seems likely. In 1642, a civil war broke out in England pitting the Puritans and the merchant class (supporting the Parliamentary Army under Oliver Cromwell) against the nobility, gentry, and clergy (supporting King Charles I). Thomas and Mary were or Puritanical leanings. Thomas's younger brother, Daniel, rose to Major in Cromwell's army before being executed in 1660 as one of the 13 regicides of Charles I. But the New World did nothing for longevity. Thomas died, apparently from the rigors of pioneer life, at 27. Daniel lasted until age 38 before his one-way trip in a hangman's cart up Tyburn Hill. Even so, Daniel's children emigrated to the New World about 1678, to South Carolina where the name Axtell died out in 1692.

  • Note: (Second compiler of this family history.) A visit was made to Morten in his home on August 9, 1956 by Sanna Nelson Lohre and her son John. Morten had not married. He was a farmer and was also handy with tools. He rode in the "Bile" with the visitors and showed them his house in town which he now used as a shop and it contained many of the things he had forged and made. He appeared to have many friends who greeted him with a genial "God-Dag, Morten." He enjoyed telling his friends of the coincidence of his addressing a letter to his cousin in America when she came to his door: "Ja, Jeg var lid ved at skrive til Mende, og saa kom hun og picket o Dor. Ja, vor det ikke Plusig?"1

Peder Nissen Nielsen1

M, #1298, b. 4 February 1877

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: Peder Nissen Nielsen was born on 4 February 1877 in Ribe, DenmarkBG.1
  • Story:

Peder was an artist (Maler). He never married. A large picture about 5' x 7' that he painted was sent in memory of his uncle, Jorgen Nelson, who passed away in 1906. This was a sepia oil painting of Christ with palms extended over the inscription:

Kommer hid til Mig, alle I som arbeide, og er bespurede,
(Come to me, all who labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest Matt. :12:28 RSV)

On the back of the picture is written: Dete Bilede er givet till Erendring of vore Frelse af Jorgen Nielsen, Lodi (This picture is given in remembrance of our relative in Jorgen Nelson, Lodi). The picture (1968) hangs in the balcony of the Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church, Wakonda. It graced the front, behind the altar, of the Lodi Lutheran Church where Jorgen's family worshipped, before that church merged with the Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church at Westreville on the Wakonda rural route. Another of Peer's paintings is owned by Mrs. Maria Nelson, the widow of a cousin, who lives in Vancouver, Washington.1
