  • Note
Minna was born on 5 Dec 1898 and baptised on 7 Apr 1900 at Trinity Church in Akron, Iowa according to the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Records, 1826-1945. She was not listed in the Hansen household in the 1900 or 1910 census. A logical conclusion would be that she had passed away between the baptism date (7 Apr 1900) and the census date (5 Jun 1900). Roger Jorgenson, however, remembers his mother talking about her Aunt Minnie.

Last Rites Held For Mrs. Chris. Andersen Tuesday Afternoon

Mrs. Chris Andresen, an early-day resident of Akron vicinity, passed away at her home in this city at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 1948, after an illness of about three weeks at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 18 days. On September 10th she was injured in a fall in her home and five days later suffered a paralytic stroke and gradually declined until the final summons came.

Margaretha Selck, daughter of Simon and Elsie (Rehler) Selck, was born January 29, 1869, in Heide, Holstein, Germany, where she was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Lutheran church. In 1887, at the age of 20 she came to the United States, coming directly to Union County, South Dakota. There, on May 19, 1887, she was united in marriage with Hans Christian Anderson, and their union was blessed with thirteen children eight sons and five daughters. Jeppa Peterson and family of five daughters and wife left Copenhagen, Denmark by ship in 1866. When outbound only a week, cholera broke out aboard ship. The disease took the lives of two of the children. Their bodies were wrapped in blankets and they were buried at sea by night. On arrival in New York City, the ship was placed in quarantine for 13 weeks. There another child died and then, just before quarantine was lifted, the wife died and quarantine was imposed once more. Where she and the last child were buried we do not know; one may assume somewhere on land as arranged by Immigration Service. The family now was reduced to the father and two daughters, Lenna of four years and Magdalena of nine.

Jeppa knew someone in Racine, Wisconsin and somehow made his way there and took a job as a shoemaker. The next year he took a homestead in the Wakonda, South Dakota area. The family lived in difficult economic circumstance. When Magdalena was 11 or 12 a decision was made that she must leave home and find work. Leaving Lena at home to keep house for the father, Magdalena walked to Yankton. The first day she walked about half the way, stopping for the night at the farm home of friends named Jensen. After sleeping there and replenishing her food supply, she arrived in Yankton the next day. She found a job working in the home of a doctor, working at a wage of one dollar and a half per week and doing the washing, ironing, cooking and caring for the four children of the family. A few years later while attending a Sunday meeting in someone's home she met a Lutheran homesteader named Johnson and they soon were married. Johnson was 30 years of age and Magdalena 15. Magdalena referred to Johnson as "Mr. Johnson."

Four sons were born to this marriage: Joe, Jim, Alfred, and Ed. When Magdalena was 20 years of age, Mr. Johnson died of pneumonia and left her a widow. Either before or after Johnson's death a relative of Johnson sponsored the immigration from Norway of one Ole (Vold) Christopherson who, on arrival, was employed on the Johnson farm as a hired hand. He and Magdalena were married and lived out their lives together on the farm, retiring to Centerville in their old age and dying there. To this union children were born, one of them being Mattie, who married Charlie. Mattie and Charlie Johnson are the grandparents of Senator Tim Johnson from South Dakota.
