4)Oletha Loghry, age 13, daughter.7
- Alt. Death: She has conflicting death information of 3 May 1938 and Villisca, Montgomery, Iowa, United StatesBGO.8
- Story:
Mrs. Joe Loghry, 47, was fatally injured at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday and her left leg was torn off at the knee as she was struck by the rear fender of the De Sota sedan driven by Thomas S. Dennis of Kansas City, Mo., when he lost control of the machine at the Loghry service station on highway No. 71 three miles north of Villisca.
Mrs. Loghry, who lived with her family in their residence just north of the station, had been over to the station for a loaf of bread and was on her way home when the accident occurred. Dennis' car went off the pavement a short distance south of the station and as he reached the station it swerved off again, the fender striking Mrs. Loghry who was standing about six feet from the concrete.
She was hurled twenty feet against an end guardrail post and bounced back from the impact. Her leg was thrown sixty feet farther down an embankment, and her shoe and overshoe were both torn from the foot. They were found several feet beyond where her severed leg was picked up.
When her son LeRoy, who operates the station, and his wife, both of whom witnessed the accident, reached Mrs. Loghry she was conscious and gave directions for bandaging her leg which she was holding with her hands to check the flow of blood.
Accompanied by her husband, her son LeRoy and her son-in-law, Ray Mathews, she was rushed in her son's car to Villisca and from here the Eno & Sutphan ambulance to the Brown Hospital in Clarinda, where the injury to the leg was taken care of at once, but the back and other injuries which Mrs. Loghry sustained when she was struck were too great for her system to withstand and death relieved her suffering.
Dennis, who is in the employ of a lumber firm in Kansas City, was on his way to Omaha Tuesday, accompanied by his wife who had recently been in a hospital and was in poor physical condition. She suffered from minor injuries [because of] the accident at the Loghry station.
After striking Mrs. Loghry, the Dennis car hit a guardrail post on the east side of the pavement, slid approximately 180 feet where it hit a post on the west side of the pavement and went down the roadway embankment where it stopped in the drainage ditch. The machine traveled 162 feet from where Mrs. Loghry was sitting after she was struck and it did not upset. The front and rear fenders on the right side were both mashed, and front and rear bumpers were badly bent. It was brought to Van's Chevrolet Co. garage in Villisca.
Dennis awaited the arrival of Sheriff John Conkel and Patrolman R. D. Muir and after they obtained all available information about the accident he and his wife accompanied Sheriff Conkel to Red Oak.
Before they left for Red Oak, however, Mrs. Dennis, who had been ill seven months in a hospital in Kansas City and was accompanying her husband to Omaha on advice of her physician, was brought to Villisca to the office of Dr. J. Clark Cooper where she was given medical attention. Mr. Dennis was taken to the office of County Attorney Harold Bickford in Red Oak where he agreed to remain in Red Oak until proper legal disposition of the accident was made. Wednesday afternoon the insurance company in which Mr. Dennis carries protection affected a settlement with Mr. Loghry in his civil claim for damage.
Coroner W. S. Reiley of Red Oak, who was in Villisca yesterday afternoon, said no inquest would be held, and Mr. Dennis, accompanied by his wife, was permitted to continue on his way to Omaha in his car which, after being repaired in Van's Chevrolet Co. garage here, was delivered to him in Red Oak.
Mrs. Loghry, who was Mrs. Sarah Goodwin before her marriage to Mr. Loghry was married to Mr. Loghry 32 years ago. They have two sons, LeRoy, 27, who operates the service station where his mother was fatally injured, and Leland, 5 and one daughter, Mrs. Ray Mathews, 22. Three years ago they moved from their farm southwest of Villisca to the land Mr. Loghry had previously purchased north of Villisca and where he built his present home and the service station.
Besides her husband and children, Mrs. Loghry leaves also two brothers and six sisters. They are James Goodwin, Villisca; Jesse Goodwin, Omaha; Mrs. Elsie McNeal, Mrs. Anna Roberts, Mrs. Geneva McCleveland and Mrs. Esther Todgren, Omaha; Mrs. Emma Hunter, Carbon; and Mrs. May Hoffman, Clarinda.
Following her death Tuesday night, Mrs. Loghry's body was brought to the Eno & Sutphen funeral chapel to await the funeral arrangements for which had not been completed early this morning.1
