    Story
After 1985 | Pleasant Valley, Clay, South Dakota, United States
My sisters Bertha Lambert, Clara Harrington, Hannah Rasmussen and myself, Mabel Jorgenson, have many memories of Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church and the Westerville community.

Our Mother, Anna Wold arrived in the United States from Trondheim, Norway in 1882 at the age of 16. Our father Iver Hanson arrived from there in 1884 at the age of 19. They met and married in Sioux City, Iowa.

In 1895 they moved to Westerville where they became members of Pleasant Valley Lutheran. Six of their seven children were born here, the eldest was born and baptized in Sioux City. The other six were baptized at Pleasant Valley. Three of us were confirmed here, the other four at Trinity Lutheran in Vermillion.

Our father was custodian and Sunday School Superintendent at Pleasant Valley. He also participated in the Sunday Worship Service, always reading the lessons and offering the first prayer. He attended every funeral, tolling the bell during the procession before the funeral and when the procession went to the cemetery.

Our father was a painter and carpenter and many of the houses and buildings he constructed are still standing in the Westerville area. He built the pulpit for the church. Many years later a new one was purchased, and we have been told that the one he built was given to Bergen Lutheran Church.

At one time a building was erected to the north of the present church which was used to shelter the horses from the weather. Our father was the foreman and of course, the men of the church assisted.

There was the time when the church pews needed to be refinished. The women thought they could remove the finish to help the painter. They used lye, and when the new finish was applied it did not dry, resulting in sticky pews, until the painter, Iver Hanson did the job himself.

I also remember the Sunday when Pastor Warburg did not get to Sunday School. He did arrive in time to conduct the worship service with the explanation that their cow had fallen and broken her leg. He could not let her suffer, so he took the Sunday School time to butcher. Some members of the congregation frowned on that but in the interest of food for their table, I am sure the Lord understood.

The men of the church made all of the decisions. They sat on one side and the women and children on the other. Our Mother was a devout Lutheran, along with the other women of the church was very busy raising a large family, and perhaps did not have the time to be active in the church, had it been permitted. She died in 1952 at the age of 86.

For all of the work he did at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church, Iver Hanson received a plot in the cemetery as his pay.

Due to declining health, he moved his family to Vermillion in May 1911. He died in June of 1914.

My sisters and I have two living brothers. In 1985 the six of us are all over age 80. We attribute our longevity to our Norwegian Heritage.

    Story
29 May 1938 | Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa, United States

On Sunday, 29 May 1938, a kind hearted but not so clever bandit held up and robbed four guests of $16 in a Sioux City downtown hotel and then gave them back $10 when they said it was all the money they had. The man, Ing Hanson, 30, of Council Bluffs, was arrested later that evening when he admitted to the hotel manager and a patrolman that he was the holdup man. He failed to give the manager a reason for his generosity, however.

The four victims, all traveling representatives of a publishing firm, reported to the hotel management that a masked bandit had entered their room in the movie manner of slouch hat, handkerchief over the face and gun concealed in the right coat pocket. They said the man demanded all their money which they gave him. When the bandit asked for more and they replied that $15 was all they had, he returned $10 and left.

Hanson was taken to the city jail and booked on an open charge. Detectives were seeking to connect Hanson with a similar holdup several weeks ago in the same hotel when a masked man took $80 from a guest and returned $70 of it at the victim's request.

The Sioux City Journal reported the following day that Ing Hanson, dubbed the "kindhearted bandit" by police, confessed Monday night to another holdup in which he returned most of the look to the victim, a traveling salesman, in a room at the same hotel. The victim in this case was a dress salesman from New York city and reported to authorities that a masked bandit who appeared to have a revolver in his coat pocket entered his room and demanded money. The victim handed over $80 and told Ing it was all the money he had. Ing then gave him back $70 of the loot and left.

When booked at the city jail on an open charge, Hanson gave his home address as Council Bluffs. He said he formerly lived in Vermillion, South Dakota.

In 1938, justice moved very fast. On 31 May 1938, just two days after the second crime, Ing Hanson, 32, Council Bluffs, termed the "kindhearted" bandit by police in Sioux City, was sentenced to five years in the state penitentiary at Fort Madison on a plea of guilty to larceny.

The judge and the county attorney's office agreed to recommend that Hanson be paroled at the end of one year. Records indicate that this did not happen, as he was enumerated in the 1940 U.S. Census at Fort Madison and a draft registration card in 1941 said he had been discharged from the state penitentiary. It appears he may have served the full three years.

Ing, who was an ex-convict, refused to explain the motives for his queer banditry. The Sioux City Journal quoted him as saying, "I knew it was illegal and that I couldn't get away with it." Ing had admitted to police to serving a 13-month sentence in the South Dakota penitentiary for a holdup. This would have been prior to 1938. No further details are available at this time on this previous sentence.

He was transported to the state prison on 10 Jun 1938. The Sioux City Journal reported on June 11, 1938, that Hanson was sentenced to five years for holding up a guest at the Martin Hotel.

In an article titled, "An Example of a Square Peg in a Round Hole," The Courier (Waterloo, Iowa), on 27 Jun 1938 reported:

Sympathy has its uses. Like the quality of mercy, it is not strained. And yet, there are times when a surge of sympathy is a distinct drawback to successful consummation of one's objectives.

The chief of detectives at Sioux City recently was confronted with the task of trying to decide what to do about Ing Hanson. Mr. Hanson was accused of robbing four persons of $16 and then returning $10 when they pleaded they were "broke."

The Sioux City police official's duty was plain. Invulnerable to the weakness that prompted Mr. Hanson to return part of his loot, he did his part toward sending the bandit to the penitentiary.

Mr. Hanson would never have been a success as a bandit, but his compassion is such that he might rob again to get a nickel for a panhandler.

"Misericordia se abstinere hominem oportet," said Piautus. That is very good advice for a bandit--"A man should keep his heart-strings tightly drawn"--at least during working hours, if he is a bandit.
