Gentry of car No. 186 of the Walker street line, prevented a serious accident when his car struck a team and wagon containing Albert McFadden, his wife, their four children, Hazel, aged 16, Rosa 14, Fred 10, Glen 5, and a playmate, Jessie Short, 12 years old, at 10:30 o'clock last night on the corner of Walker and East Seventeenth streets.

McFadden attempted to turn his team across the track ahead of the car, according to witnesses. His wagon was overturned, although the car stopped within six feet of the point where it struck the wagon. Mrs. Clara McFadden suffered from a sprained ankle, and her daughter Hazel was badly bruised about the head. The children and Mr. McFadden escaped without injury.

Mrs. Thornton died of a stroke Sunday at Broadlawns Polk County Hospital.

She was born in Olathe, Kan., and lived 75 years in Des Moines. She was a member of Miller United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Albert of Des Moines and Arthur of La Habra, Calif., seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Albert Donald Thornton, 72, of 1426 Thompson Ave., who died of a respiratory ailment Friday at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hamilton's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Thornton was a lifelong resident of Des Moines. He retired eight years ago as a custodian for the Des Moines School District. He was a member of the Eastgate Masonic Lodge and the Ascalon and Alpha Council, and was a World War II veteran with the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Alvretta, two sons, Carl and Robert Dean, both of Des Moines; a brother, Arthur of Los Angeles; and five grandchildren.

Thomas probably left for Ohio about 1806, according to research done by Ken Thornton. They moved to a Quaker settlement near Dayton, Ohio. The family went via wagon, which was pulled by oxen. The wagon was loaded with household goods, food and children. Each of the families engaged in the move made five bushels of noodles before they started on the trip. They migrated from North Carolina to Ohio to get away from slavery and then left Ohio because timber was scarce, and no public land was left to enter. Illinois better suited their needs because they found good soil and an abundance of timber. After Abigail died, she asked that if Thomas ever married again, he would name a daughter Abigail after her. Thomas did this after marrying Sarah. Thomas and Sarah moved to Vermilion County, Illinois in 1821, where they both died in 1834. Thomas's gravestone could still be read in the 1970s, but by the later 1990s, it was becoming exceedingly to read. It was not anchored in the ground and was leaning.
