Isaac Cook1,2

M, #2046, b. 1742, d. 15 January 1820

Parents

Family: Charity Wright (b. 12 November 1742, d. 13 November 1822)

Biography

  • Birth: Isaac Cook was born in 1742 in Warrington, Bucks, Province of Pennsylvania, Colonial AmericaBG.3,4
  • Marriage: He and Charity Wright were married in 1763 in Bush River MM, Prince Frederich Parish, Province of South Carolina, Colonial AmericaBG.3,5
  • Death: He died on 15 January 1820, at age ~78, in Union, South Carolina, United StatesBGO.6,4
  • Note: During the last half of the eighteenth century four principal centers of Quakerism arose in South Carolina and one in Georgia. These were in Kershaw, Marlborough, Newberry, and Union Counties, South Carolina and in Columbia (now McDuffie) County, Georgia.

Bush River Monthly Meeting, in Newberry County, South Carolina, was established in 1770. Newberry County is in the west-central part of South Carolina. Dr. Stephen B. Weeks in Southern Quakers and Slavery, page 115, says: "The group of meetings clustering around Bush River was the most important in South Carolina. The origin of this meeting and the time it began cannot be discovered. William Coate was living near Bush River before 1762, and Samuel Kelly, a native of King's County, Ireland, removed to Newberry County, from Camden, in 1762."

Early members of Bush River Meeting included Eli Cook, Isaac Cook, James Haworth, and William Wright, all surnames appearing in this family tree.

About 1802, moved by a desire to live in a country where no slaves were held, Friends of Bush River began a migration to Ohio. Between 1802 and 1807 more than one hundred certificates of removal were issued, most of them being for families. This so depleted the membership that the monthly meeting seems to have been all but abandoned in 1808, though not formally laid down until 1822.
  • Christening: Isaac Cook was christened in 1743 in Newberry, Prince Frederick Parish, Province of South Carolina, Colonial AmericaBG.
  • Alt. Death: He has conflicting death information of 15 January 1820 and Warren, Ohio, United StatesBGO.7

Isaac and Charity Wright Cook are both recorded as died and buried at Caesars Creek, Ohio and Silver Creek, Indiana. Hinshaw reports what looks like confusion between two different couples. However, that is just what is reported in both Monthly Meetings minutes. There is even further references (like their childrens' names) that further confirm that the same Isaac and Charity lived, died, and were buried in both places at the same time.6

Although she had been accused of sexual impropriety in 1760 resulting in estrangement from the Quakers for eight years, by 1762 the earlier controversy had died down and the Bush Run Meeting commisioned her to be a preacher. During the Revolutionary War, she traveled throughout the south advocating pacificism. Beginning in 1797, she toured Quaker meetings throughout Europe, returning to the U.S. in 1802. She and her husband established Quaker meetings throughout Ohio and Indiana.9
