    Eileen Louise Hohenstein, 78, of Des Moines, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 after a brief illness. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines, Iowa. Family will green friends for one hour prior to the service. A visitation will be held at Wintz Funeral Home in Yankton, SD at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2017, before leaving for the cemetery at 2 p.m. A graveside service will follow at the Danish Lutheran Cemetery in Gayville,SD.

    A devoted mother, Eileen is survived by her three children: Todd Forney and Maureen Beytagh of Powell,Ohio, Craig and Barbara Forney of Ames, Iowa, and John and Denise Forney of West Des Moines, Iowa. She was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren.

    In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to Reiman Gardens, 1407 University Boulevard, Ames, Iowa 50011 or http://www.reimangardens.com/donate/, which was a favorite destination for Eileen and her grandchildren.

    He owned land in 1846 in Keokuk, Iowa, United States. In 1846 the government offered for sale all the lands in the county. The land office at that time was located in Fairfield and on the first day of the sales all the settlers who had provided means, either in person or represented by bidders, were on hand. The sales were made exclusively for cash, and the government would receive nothing but bills on the State Bank of Missouri. The minimum price of the land was a dolar and a quarter per acre. The sale continued for two days and ostensibly the land was sold to the highest bidder, but in reality thee was but one bidder to each tract and that was the owner of the claim or his representative. During the two days sale they disposed of about 150 tracts of land. The men individuals who entered land at this, the first land sale for the county included Elizabeth Pringle and Mitchell Gill.
