M, #2631, b. 1687, d. 17 February 1717
Biography
- Birth: Luke Dillon was born in 1687 in Kilarney, County Kerry, IrelandBG.1,2
- Marriage: He and Susannah Garrett were married about 1709 in IrelandBG The couple eloped and immigrated to America. She came from a wealthy family, while Luke's family was quite poor. They went to the Quaker Colony on Nantucket Island off the Massachusetts cost. They remained in Nantucket until about 1714 when they moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3
- Death: He died on 17 February 1717, at age ~30, in Bucks, Province of Pennsylvania, Colonial AmericaBG, A descendant tells the story that Luke was a drunk. In the winter of 1717, he spent an evening at the local tavern, got drunk and rode home in a driving snowstorm. On the way, he fell from his horse and rolled into a ditch. His body was not discovered until a thaw later in the winter. His last child was born after his death and was named for him. Susannah remarried about a year later to Peter Dillon, in Buck's County, Pennsylvania, and they later moved into Virginia and then into North Carolina.1
- Story:
The Dillon family was an Irish Quaker Family. He has been described in family lore as a red-headed weaver. Luke's family was quite poor. He won the hearth and hand of Susannah Garret, the daughter of a man of wealth and fame. Her father disinherted her after her marriage to one he called a "snotty nosed weaver." About 1710, Luke Dillon and Susannah Garret eloped and married in Ireland. After their marriage, they immigrated to America, going to a Quaker Colony on Nantucket Island off the Massachusetts coast. Here Susanna learned to weave and they supported themselves by their calling.
They remained on Nantucket until about 1714 when they moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Their first two children were born on nantucket and their last two were born in Bucks County.
Family lore is that Luke was a "drinking man. In the winter of 1717, after spending an evening at the local t avern, he rode home drunk in a driving snowstorm. Various versions of his demise included that on the way he fell from his horse and rolled into a ditch. His horse returned home, but he was not discovered until a thaw later in the winter, and that he went to the mill on horseback fivemiles away, starting home in the evening facing a snowstorm with a botte of liquor in his pocket. He got off his horse, sat down by a tree, and there froze to death and was not found for six weeks. His last child was born after his death and was named for him.
Susannah remarried about a year later to Peter Dillon in Buck's County, Pennsylvania. No one is sure how Luke and Peter were related. Susannah and Peter later moved into Virginia and then into North Carolina.4
- Note: The Dillon family was an Irish Quaker Family. Luke married in Ireland and came to America, and several of his grandchildren married Haworth's.2

- Name: John Scarborough, III, was also known as Scarbro Scarborough.
- Will: He signed a will.
- Note: John was a minister and landowner. He came to America in 1682 with his father. John II left him in the care of friends when he returned to England to attempt to bring his wife Sarah Ashby back to America. It was said in "The Friend" Vol. 29, p. 244, that "John Jr. being somewhat irked by the strictness of the friends in whose care he had been left ran away and lived with the Indians for a number of years. A statement in the Evening Bulletin of Philadelphia said that John Scarborough was the interpreter for William Penn when the latter met with the Indians. Samuel Preston, a great-grandson born in 1756 said that John Scarborough, III, was once instrumental in preventing an Indian War. He was said to have often visited the Indians on religious missions for the Quakers. He was the first white man to actually settle in Solebury/Buckingham Valley. He also farmed and was a wheelwright.
John Scarborough Jr. was a very active member of the "friends" faith. He became a well known and highly esteemed Quaker Preacher. John III had also became active in the Quaker faith in England, and in 1724 was recommended as a minister in the church. The Buckingham and Solebury Friends in England belonged to the Falls Monthly Meeting, and the marriages were recorded there.
- Immigration: He immigrated in October 1682 to Bucks, Pennsylvania, United StatesBGO. John II and their children were Quakers but his wife Sarah was not. He was a coachman and blacksmith like his father and was also a member of the Peel Meeting.
In 1682 he accepted William Penn's open invitation to come to America where freedom of religion could be found. He took his oldest child, John III with him to America, where he purchased for five pounds 250 acres along Neshaminy Creek near Langhorne in Bucks County. He had purchased the land while still in England on July 4, 1682, and arrived in Pennsylvania in October of 1682. Father and son stayed in Bucks County, just north of Philadelphia for almost two years.
In 1684 he returned to England to bring the rest of his family to America. His wife Sarah was deathly afraid of the long sea voyage and they never came back to America. He remained in London until his death on April 11, 1706.4
