He was born on his parents' farm located on a bend on the Holston River, some 25 miles above Knoxville, Tennessee. The place became known as Haworth Bend. His birth is recorded in the minutes of Lost Creek Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends in Jefferson County, Tennessee.
He married Elizabeth Maxwell at the Grassy Valley Meetinghouse in Jefferson County, Tennessee on 4th month 11th day 1811. Elizabeth was the daughter of Hugh Maxwell and Elizabeth McLenden. After his marriage to Elizabeth Maxwell, he carried on a farm situated on an island in the Holston River.
By the time they decided to go to Indiana in 1817, they had several children, both boys and girls. On the 3rd month 13th day 1818 Joel and sons John and Laban were received by certificate at Silver Creek Monthly Meeting in Wayne (now Union) County, Indiana from Lost Creek Monthly Meeting in Tennessee. Joel died in Indiana on 4 Dec 1854 and Elizabeth on 30 Jul 1866 in Salem, near the town of Liberty, Union County, Indiana.1

When New Hope was founded, the Lost Creek Friends were also included in their membership. It was founded by direction of Westfield Monthly Meeting (Tom's Creek) in Surry County, North Carolina.5,6
