  • Note
Thomas was a Captain of Militia in the British Army. He joined under General Cunningham. Due to being an officer of the Militia, he was subject to the death penalty during the Revolutionary War. Thomas, along with his older brother John, served in the Militia from 14 June 1780, under Captain Henry Rudolph and Colonel John Cotton in the Stevens Creek Militia, serving in the Battle of Kings Mountain. From 10 April 1781 to 5 May 1781, he served under Lt. Colonel Baley Cheney in the 96th Brigade. By 23 August 1781, he was at Corchester under Cotton, serving as lieutenant under Cheney in the 96th Brigade and as Captain from 4 April 1781 until December 1781 under Colonel Thomas Pearson of the Little River Militia. He took his three sons to Nova Scotia when they fled Charleston, South Carolina on 13 December 1782, during the evacuation of that city. Thomas died soon after arriving in Nova Scotia and left the care of his two youngest sons, Abraham and Eli, in the care of his fellow soldier, Rueben Lively. They would have been cared for by Mr. Lively under 21 years of age and would have been taught a trade. All three of Thomas' sons, Thomas, Abraham, and Eli, were given 250 acres of land in Nova Scotia as their inheritance.

He immigrated in December 1782 to Advocate Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada. THORNTON, THOMAS

Of South Carolina. A native of America, Thornton settled at Ninety Six, where he had 150 acres, twenty cleared. He served at first in the British militia under General Cunningham, and again after the reduction of Charleston in 1780. Thornton moved to Charleston with his family during the evacuation of Ninety Six, and then travelled to Halifax with his children following the death of his wife. He died at Halifax soon after his arrival. Thornton's eldest son, Thomas, filed the claim. (He was then twenthy-one.) Thomas Jr. went to Rawdon, Nova Scotia with his two infant brothers, who were in the care of Reuben Lively. His father had commanded a company in the regiment of militia led by Colonel Thomas Pearson. Thomas Thornton, Jr. estimated his loss at £116 sterling, and received £50 sterling.

    Story
    1806 | Ohio, United States
Thomas probably left for Ohio about 1806, according to research done by Ken Thornton. They moved to a Quaker settlement near Dayton, Ohio. The family went via wagon, which was pulled by oxen. The wagon was loaded with household goods, food and children. Each of the families engaged in the move made five bushels of noodles before they started on the trip. They migrated from North Carolina to Ohio to get away from slavery and then left Ohio because timber was scarce, and no public land was left to enter. Illinois better suited their needs because they found good soil and an abundance of timber. After Abigail died, she asked that if Thomas ever married again, he would name a daughter Abigail after her. Thomas did this after marrying Sarah. Thomas and Sarah moved to Vermilion County, Illinois in 1821, where they both died in 1834. Thomas's gravestone could still be read in the 1970s, but by the later 1990s, it was becoming exceedingly to read. It was not anchored in the ground and was leaning.

  • Note

Calvin secured an education sufficient to fit him for successful business. When 17 years old he concluded he could do better than living on a farm and that he would learn a trade. His father attempted to dissuade him, telling him that it was his intention to give each of his children a farm or set them up in business; that if he left his home, he would get no farm, and no start in business from him. Despite the wishes of his father, he apprenticed himself for 30 months to learn the trade of cabinetmaker. At the end of the first year of his apprenticeship, in 1848, he got a ticket-of-leave to visit his father, who had removed to Polk County. His visit completed, he returned and served the remainder of his apprenticeship.

In September 1850 he returned to Fort Des Moines, in a prairie schooner. He at once began work at his trade. And with resolute spirit took up the burden of life, often being reminded of the "no farm" decree of his father, which was faithfully kept, and which he later in life often said was a real benefit, for it forced him to rely upon his own sources.

In January 1851, having reached his majority, he decided to invest in farm land. In April 1851 he was elected clerk of Delaware Township, and soon after Township Assessor, Director of the School District and President of the School Board, and held one or more of those offices so long as he lived in the township. In 1857 Calvin was appointed by the County Clerk to organize the township for election, revenue and judicial purposes. He was elected the first Justice of the Peace in the township, and held the place so long as he resided there. A few years later, his father-in-law died, leaving a farm which is now the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Calvin sold his farm, settled with the heirs of his father-in-law, took possession of the farm, and lived thereon until he sold it to the State Agricultural Society in 1886.
