Jens Jesson

M, #1953, b. about 1700, d. after 1739

Family: Dorthe Terkelsdaughter (b. about 1709, d. after 1786)

  • Birth about 1709
    Death: after 1786
  • Note
He is our progenitor in direct masculine line. Jens must have been born circa 1700 as it is the farthest back this part of the family has been found because all the church books were burned together with rectories, the ministers and lots of their parishioners were killed by the evil Catholic armies when the famous general Wallenstein invaded Jutland after our popular King Chr. IV lost the battle by Luther am Barenberg, both he and his army were followed home by that evil and stupid army of Polish and German mercenaries, who plundered and robbed and burned everywhere.

Hard times, very hard times for our poor ancestors. After that the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf went into the war. They ought to have united their armies. I am sure they could have won the victory over the Catholic army! But those two kings were very jealous of each other. Sorry, but the world history would have got another look! The one of them could have gotten the job as Pope and the other one as emperor!

Well, I have by help of a private helper on the country archive in Viborg found documents from Ribe hospitals farming, and it is to read for the date 28 of March 1768, that farmer JENS JESSEN then leave his right as copyholder to his son TERKEL JENSSON on a farm belonging to Ribe hospital. Hospital at that time was not as today. It was nearly a kind of home for age, who had no family or mentally diseased. The doctors of that time could not do very much for illness.

A pleasant thing by the whole is, that the farm he was copyholder on was the same as the knight "SORTE PLOUGH." Black Plough in English was owner off. In the years 1137 he killed the Danish King ERIK II EMUNE. That is many years behind us in time. As far as we knew fall the Knight SORTE PLOUG in a battle by O shild near Alborg, his widow married after that the King SIGURD JORSALFAR. I will not think, we have any family-relations to them, it is a very long time since 532 years, Pestilence, wars and lots of other troubles has gone over the land and country in those many years.

The manor-house owner on "SONDERSKOV" and "NIELSBYGARD" changed name as his farmers did. Not "von" or "de" but only Madsson or Hermannsson. It is called the "patronic" rule, and was used in Denmark since the old "Viking" time, and are still used on Iisland and the Faroe isles. But it was annulated by Royal Law May 30, 1822.

Family: Martha Boykin (b. about 1716, d. 1794)

  • Note
According to Ken Thornton in his book, "Thorntons in North Carolina," he believes that Thomas and Martha were converts to the Quaker religion. They were converted in Virginia. Before this, they were part of the Puritan sect of the Church of England. Because of persecution for being a Quaker, they left Virginia and went to North Carolina. Part of Ken's reasoning for this is that he is unable to find a Thomas Thornton among the Quakers in England.
