The Dirty Thirties - a Blessing
    by Betty Jorgensen Fiedler

Andrew and Frances Jorgenson took up residence southeast of Wakonda. The great depression took away all resources of providing a living for the family. When Elizabeth was born, the family did not have sufficient money to buy diaper pins. This will provide thought for the severity of the financial distress that plagued this and other South Dakota farm families during the struggling depression years. The writer clearly recalls waking summer mornings as a small child, to see the kerosene lamp burning, because the sun could not break through the heavy blanket of dust-laden air that enshrouded the country side.

When things could get no worse, they of course became better. Clothing, food, and "feed and seed loans" came into being. Cod liver oil and immunization shots came to the aid of the undernourished school children. Father was able to rent a farm and soon the family had more and better food and clothing, and the life of drudgery lightened for the patient and loving mother.

It has been said we should forget the dirty thirties and the bleakness and almost hopelessness of the day-to-day struggle against the great odds. I feel it should be a reminder that we should thank God that we have the many blessings and conveniences that we enjoy today. Gone are the hardships, but gone also are the days of childhood, when children could take a nickel and feel like they could buy the whole world with it; when Santa Claus was welcomed with a tree-branch trimmed with popcorn and cranberries. One small gift was loved and tenderly cared for.

The ragged desolate shacks of the depression years have been swept away, but the writer can still picture them, alive with children playing; and she can feel the tender loving care of courageous, determined parents.

I hereby pay loving respect to the parents of the great depression and the beautiful memories they gave us. Surely they provided great insight, courage, and reverent respect for God and country.

Parents

Family: Albert Anton Conrad (b. 28 December 1875, d. 22 March 1951)

  • Name Johanna Marie Conrad
  • Note
Johanna and Albert farmed near Wakonda. The following article appeared in the March 12, 1931, edition of the Wakonda Newspaper.

MRS. ALBERT CONRAD IS TAKEN BY DEATH
Mother Answers Final Summons Soon After Birth of Daughter, Funeral Held Tuesday

The gladness of the birth of a daughter in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Conrad did not have long to endure, for the mother failed to retain her strength, pneumonia developed, and Saturday she answered the summons of death, nine days after the birth of the child. The little life which came into the world will never know the caress of its own mother's hands on her brow, or the tender touch of a mother's kiss, but will not be without the best of loving care, for Mrs. Hans Nelson, sister of Mr. Conrad, plans to take the baby into her home.

Johanna Marie Conrad was born in Meckling, S.D., February 20, 1891, and died March 7, 1931. She resided with her parents at Meckling for several years, when the family moved to their farm five miles east of Wakonda where she lived until she married.

Johanna Jorgenson was united in marriage to Albert Conrad June 26, 1909. To this union was born five children, three of whom preceded their mother in death. Mary, age nine months, and two infant sons.

Mrs. Conrad was held in high esteem by all those who knew her. She was a faithful and willing worker, and took active part in the social life of her community. As wife and mother she will be sadly missed by her husband and children.

The death of Mrs. Conrad March 7, was just a month later than that of her sister, Mrs. Carl Gunderson, who died of pneumonia in her home at Viborg, February 7, 1931.

Besides the infant daughter, Maurine Johanna, Mrs. Conrad is survived by her husband, Albert Conrad, and one son, Bennett, 15 years old, who attends the local high school. There are four brothers, Carl Jorgenson, of Viborg; Otto Jorgenson, Menno; Jens Jorgenson, Vermillion; and Andrew Jorgenson, Beresford. There is one sister, Mrs. Harry Ebbesen, Viborg.

The funeral was held at two o'clock at the Congregational Church in Wakonda, the Rev. G.E. Green, pastor of the church, conducting the service. The large attendance of friends at the funeral attested to the high esteem in which Mrs. Conrad was held by those among whom she had lived for so many years. Burial was in the Union Cemetery in Wakonda.
