  Donald was born 9 Mar 1946 to Cleo and Dorothy (Travis) Vanatta. He was raised with his sisters Edna, Barbara Sue and Teresa in rural Thurman. When he was in high school he lived with his grandparents and helped on the family farm.
  
  He graduated from Fremont-Mills in 1964. He admired and loved all of his classmates and was very proud of them. He thought very highly of them and thought of them as family. Donald served in the U.S. Army (1964-1966) during the Vietnam Conflict. In Germany he trained incoming troops to build floating bridges. While serving he was awarded a medal for sharp shooting. When he returned home he married Nancy Loghry and they welcomed Donnie Guy Vanatta in 1969. He farmed and worked at the Thurman Quarry.
  
  Donald married Nancy Smith July 8, 1977. For 46 years they shared a life together in rural Thurman and Tabor. Marianne was welcomed into the family in 1978, Laura in 1980 and Cameron in 1982. He worked 10 years at Vogel Popcorn and really enjoyed his coworkers.
  
  Donald worked 15 years at Nebraska Beef. He thought he was late if he wasn't there an hour early to have coffee and visit. He worked with all of his children at one point or another in those 15 years.
  
  After Donald retired he spent time working on his rental houses. He enjoyed the mowing. He looked forward to watching Gunsmoke, played Lonesome Dove on a loop along with many other westerns. He looked forward to the grand kids and great-grand kids coming to visit and tracking the where abouts of the grand kids on Live 360.
  
  Donald is survived by his wife Nancy Vanatta, daughters Marianne (Jesse) Collins, Laura (Austin) Hansell, and Cameron Vanatta; grandchildren Morgan Vanatta, Breanna Vanatta, Sidnie Baier, Spencer Baier, Major Fisher, Hunter Collins, Daniel Vanatta, Isaac Vanatta and Mason Hansell; great-grandchildren Thomas Kingsolver, Keith Kingsolver, Nancy Kingsolver, Preslee Fisher, Kash Fisher and Tate Vanatta; sisters Barbara Sue (Tom) McCollum and Teresa Vanatta, mother-in-law Shirley Anson, daughter-in-law Jodie Baier. Donald was preceded in death by his first wife Nancy (Loghry) Vanatta; son Donnie Guy Vanatta; parents Cleo and Dorothy Vanatta; sister Edna Vanatta and son-in-law Ricky Meier.
  
  Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at the Tabor, IA Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Rick Blodgett officiating. Visitation will be with the family greeting friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at the Marshall Funeral Chapel in Tabor, IA. Interment will be in the Thurman, IA Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by the Williams-Jobe-Gibson American Legion Post #128 of Sidney, IA. Memorials will go to the Family. The Marshall Funeral Chapel in Tabor, IA is in charge of arrangements.²
