    Mrs. Mary Thornton

Mary Winslow was born in Grant county, Indiana January 13, 1845. At the age of ten years, with her parents, she moved to Dallas county, Iowa, near Redfield.

When seventeen years of age she was united in marriage to Jonathan Reynolds in the month of December 1861, and to this union were born six children, three sons and three daughters, namely, Milton, Mrs. Laura Vandeventer and Mrs. Rena Shawver, all of South Dakota, Mrs. Eliza Charman of Elizabeth, Colo., and Willie and Tillie, both of Des Moines, Iowa.

In January 1875, she was left a widow and struggled through the hardships of life with her six small children, until May 3, 1877, when she was again united in marriage to Riley Thornton of Polk county, Ia. This union was blessed with five children, two sons and three daughters, namely, Mrs. Ruth West, deceased, Mrs. Cora Swain, Agnes, Clayborn and Clarence, all of Osceola, Iowa.

In March 1890, they with their family moved to Clarke county, Iowa, and settled on a farm in Green Bay Township. July 31, 1900 she was again left a widow. She with her children remained on the farm until three years ago she moved to Osceola which has been her home ever since.

At an early age she united with the United Brethren church, having lived a true Christian life, always attended church services whenever health permitted, always ready to lend a helping hand to others, and always cheerful and kind hearted. About two years ago united with the Methodist church in Osceola and remained a member there until her death on Saturday, May 10, 1913. After feeding her chickens she came into the house where she had an attack of heart failure and quietly passed away. She was quiet and unassuming but lived the life of the Christian.

Mrs. Thornton leaves to mourn her death ten children, six sisters, three brothers, forty-one grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and friends. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church at one o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by her pastor Rev. L. B. Carpenter.1,5,2

Nathan Thornton

Biography

  • Birth: Nathan Thornton was born about 1845 Born either in Illinois or Indiana.1
  • Death: He died on 21 September 1862, at age ~17, in Sedalia, Pettis, Missouri, United StatesBGO, Excerpt from the book "American Patriotism, or Memoirs of Common Men" (1869) by Leonard Brown [posted to Ancestry.com on 28 Jan 2013 by Dan Olson]:

Son of Mr. Riley H. Thornton, of Douglas Township, Polk County, Iowa, was born in Vermilion County, Illinois., May 17, 1845, and came with his parents to Polk County, in July of the same year. Enlisted in Company I, 18th Iowa Infantry, July 10, 1862, being then a little past seventeen. Died Sept. 21, 1862, at Sedalia, Mo., of measles, having
been in the service about two months. He writes :

    " Sedalia, Sept. 3, 1862.
" My dear Parents, I wrote you that I had the measles at Clinton, but I think it must have been a mistake, for I have had it good since I came here. I am at the hospital now ; but I think I will leave here before long, for I am about well again. Though weak, I walk about town once in a while. I do not dare to eat what I crave, for fear of the measles coming back again, and the last state is worse than the first. One of the boys in the hospital where I am went to eating trash when he had begun to get well, and the measles came back on him and he died. Two men of our regiment have died since we came into camp, one with measles."

He says to his little brothers:

"You must be good boys, work hard, and mind what father and mother tell you, and go to meeting whenever you can ; behave yourselves properly in company, and keep in boys' place, and grow up to be respected." He was a noble boy, and strove to do his duty as a Christian. He says to his mother, in a letter written from Clinton, "You must pray for me often; for I have a hard time to serve God where I am." Though so young, he realized fully the obligations of American citizens to defend their country. Says his father." Nathan had a notion of enlisting ever since the war began. I opposed it on account of his age, until I thought he knew what hardships he would have to endure. He said that he could do as much work on the farm as a man, and that he could do as much in the army. ' If I were there,' he said, 'I would be one more to help.' I told him then to go, understanding his duty, and what he might have to suffer. It took men, he said, to support the government, and he was no better, he thought, than the rest."

He was temperate, never drinking coffee nor eating meat ; was always quite lively ; had not an enemy in the world ; was polite in his manners ; loved his little brothers and sisters dearly ; was obedient to his parents ; was kindhearted. " It seemed," said his mother, " that I could never give up for him to go ; but he would never be satisfied without going." If he had lived he would have made a good soldier. He was a congenial companion; a studious and trustworthy boy. His father could intrust to him any affairs, and go from home, leaving his work in Nathan's hands, knowing that it would be well attended to.

Thyme Lindegaard1

M, #3744, b. between 1480 and 1490, d. 1560

Biography

  • Birth: Thyme Lindegaard was born between 1480 and 1490 The exact year is not known, nor do we have any information about his parents.1
  • Marriage: He was married.
  • Death: He died in 1560 as he was last mentioned in 1555.1
  • Occupation: He worked as a a merchant. He owned houses, farms, and estates on the island of Funen bu. t had his home base in the city of Odense. He traded in cattle, and maybe also horses, to the German and Dutch market and had strong business relations with the crown, i.e. the King's household.1
  • Note: Thyme's wife is not known.

The Lindegaard family have their roots at Odense and Sallinge County, Funen, Denmark.

The name LINDEGARTH is first mentioned around 1245 when Mads Lindegarth I Fyen (Mads Lindegarth from Funen) appears in a list over old Danish names.

From 1245 to around 1490 the name appears in various documents, spelled differently like Lindegaarth / Lindegaard / Lindegardh / Lindegaardt. They are all merchants and owners of large estates on the Island of Funen.

Names like Lass Lindegaard, Knud Lindegaard, Mads Lindegaard and Thyme Lindegaard are mentioned in Sallinge County's archives in function as "Good Men," meaning that they have held high positions in the communities. A Lauritz Mathes Lindegaard appears in various papers from 1479 to 11498 as "Sandemand" - a lifelong judge function, appointed by the King. In this case, King Christan 1 and King Hans.

It is believed, and generally accepted, that all these Lindegaards are part of the same family. However, we have nothing except the name, and the fact that they lived in the same area, to link them to the first known Lindegaard in our family, Thyme (Timme) Lindegaard, who was born around 1480/90.

It is quite unique for a non-royal family to be able to follow the family roots more than 500 years back. There are not much information about the first Lindegaards, but from the beginning of the 1700s, they are quite easy to follow. From Funen they moved to other parts of the country, especially east- and southwest Jutland, and also to Norway, which was part of Denmark until 1814, and to the United States.1
  • Occupation: He worked as a appointed principal of Sct. Jorgen Hospital at Odense by King Frederik 1 on 7 December 1526., and he still held this position in 1542 when it was mentioned that he used an area near the river. Being principal was an honorary title, given to esteemed members of the society, and his duties in this regard was to make sure that the patients received proper education in the Christian faith.1

They cleared and farmed this newly purchased land together until Thomas bought out John's interest on June 10, 1662.1,3,4,5

James Wellman, the author of a pamphlet entitled, Genealogy and History of the Wellman's of New England, which he published in 1867, visited the old home of Abraham Wellman in 1810 and learned from Miss Sarah Wellman, who was then living in the ancient house, that she, her father, and her grandfather were all born in the old house. As her grandfather was Abraham Wellman, Jr., born there in 1673, it was undoubtedly "the new dwelling" which was to be the possession of the widow Elizabeth Wellman on and after 22 March 1672/23.
