• Note: 1880 Census for Saylor Township, Polk, Iowa: household of Edwin Dicks, age 50 and Mattie Dicks, age 43 was 6-year-old Julia "Dool" Dicks, daughter. Further research turned up that Julia was adopted by Edwin and Mattie Dicks. Edwin was a well-to-do farmer in the area.
  
  Edwin F. Dicks was born about 1830 in New York (1870 U.S. Federal Census, Iowa, State Census Collection, 1880 U.S. Federal Census, 1836-1925 [1885], 1900 U.S. Federal Census), or Indiana. (U.S. Civil War Draft Registrations Records, 1863-1865).
  
  The 1870 U.S. Federal Census shows the household consisting of E. F. Dicks, age 40 and Malta Dicks, age 34.
  
  The 1880 census shows the household consisting of Edwin F. Dicks, age 50; Mattie Dicks, age 43, Julia Dicks, age 6; and Ione P. Stephenson, age 15, niece born in Indiana.
  
  The 1885 state census shows the household consisting of Edward F. Dicks, age 55, Mattie Dicks, age 40, and Dool Dicks, age 10.
  
  The 1900 U.S. Federal Census shows the household consisting of Edwin F. Dicks, age 70; Mattie Dicks, age 64; Julia McDonald, age 25; Julia's husband Thomas W. McDonald, age 33; Winnie Tildon, age 19, servant; and 1-month-old Edwin A. McDonald.
  
  The will for Edwin F. Dicks spreads light on their daughter, Julia Dool Dicks. In his will (1803), he states, "I do hereby will and bequeath to my wife, Mattie Dicks, all of my property, both real and personal, for and during her natural life, with power and right upon her part, without any order of court, or further authority to sell and convey, mortgage or encumber the same or any part thereof at her discretion, for her own support or the support of our adopted daughter, Julia Dool Dicks." The remainder of the will always refers to Julia as "adopted daughter."
• Adoption: She was adopted before 1880 in Polk, Iowa, United StatesBGO. Julia was not living with her mother and step-father in Kansas in 1880. Instead, she is found residing with Edwin F. Dicks and Mattie Dicks in Saylor, Polk, Iowa, United States as their daughter. She continues to appear in censuses through 1900 as the Dicks' daughter. In the will of Edwin F. Dicks, he refers to her as "our adopted daughter."
