He worked as a It is not known what his occupation was as a young man in Denmark. The ob. vious guess is that of a hired hand, but the fact that his movements are not recorded in the churchbook at Hjortkaer may mean that he never left the parish. It is also possible that he left Hjortkaer without the move being recorded and worked on a farm at North Schleswig (South Jutland), which in those days were part of Germany.

She emigrated from Denmark. It is not known exactly when she emigrated, but it was after 1877 and maybe as late as the early 1880s. We know for certain that she lived in California. In 1896-97 she went back to Denmark to visit her family and she stayed with her brother Peder Christian and his wife, who had just had her seventh child (Preben's grandmother). Maren had a good life in Californoia but no children and begged to adopt the little girl and take her to the United States. She seemed to think her brother and sister-in-law had too many children to support, but nothing came out of it as Peder Christian and his wife Dorthea said no. It is assumed that Maren was married at the time she visited her brother.

Jes Hansen1

M, #3689, b. 5 February 1853
  • Note
Jes Hansen is mentioned in a book by Sophus Hartwidk: Danes in California, volume 2. Jes Hansen, born 5 February 1853 in Schlesvig (South Jutland). Moved to the Kingdom of Denmark in 1870 and came to San Francisco in 1875 and was a fisherman on the Sacramento River for some time. Bought land at Fresno in 1879. Took 160 acres of government land in San Lois Obispo County in 1893 and lived there for some time. Came back to Fresno in 1904. Married to Mary (Maren) Mortensen from Jutland. There were 6 children.

This could be the same Jes Hansen as mentioned in Family Search. However the information about six children does not match the Family Search information. It could be that by "no children" is meant no children at home or alive at the time. It could also mean that Maren Mortensen had no children and perhaps Jes had six from a previous marriage.
