    Story
    1968

The couple's first home, which is on the same farm where they continued to live, once housed the Lodi Post Office. Lodi was once an aspiring town hoping for a railroad to pass though it, but the rails went elsewhere, so Lodi gradually disintegrated from having a store, post office, flour mill, and other businesses to what is now all fertile farm land with only a cluster of four homes to mark the location.

In his youth, Gabriel was on the winning Dalesburg and wakonda baseball teams. He was an extensive farmer, cattle feeder, and public servant. He had served on school and local boards at various times, and at his passing, he was president of the Vermillion Valley Flood Control Group, the Farmers' Mutual Insurance Company, and was a director of the Producers Commission Association at Sioux City, Iowa.

Edna is an accomplished musician. She lived on the farm home where she came as a bride, eight miles east of Wakonda, South Dakota until 1968. In late November of 1968, Edna (Heglin) Nelson entered the Good Samaritan Home in Centerville, South Dakota. In the summer of 1970, she went to Longmont, Colorado to live with her daughter, Ruth (Nelson) Foote and her husband, Ralph Foote.

Edna is buried next to her husband Gabriel, who preceded her in death in 1967.

    Story
    1968

He homesteaded in Wyoming in 1916. He took up steam engineering and ran the light plant in Yankton, South Dakota for one year. He was later employed by a Minnesota saw mill that sent him to Bend, Oregon. During World War II he was in Alaska helping to build the Alkan Highway and barracks and camps. After the war he was a skilled worker at the port of Debarkation, Seattle, Washington until his retirement. Ellis and Effie visited Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin relatives in 1966. A pre-40th wedding anniversary dinner was held and friends enjoyed the fellowship with them. In Wisconsin, in addition to visiting Marion and Marie Slocum and family, they attended the 34th national convention of the Military Order of the Purple Heart in Milwaukee. Because of his World War I wounds, Ellis was the recipient of a purple heart and had long been a member of the organization. Effie was a division president of the auxiliary for the West Cost and she was on the national nominating committee. Their son Dennis came to South Dakota to drive home with them. Ellis passed away suddenly at Cody, Wyoming.

Alexander witnessed the probate of Alcy [—?—] on 1 June 1828 in Pickaway, Ohio, United States. Article of Argument see case no. 814, page 55
    242. This argument made and concluded on this first day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty five by and between Alexander Caldwell and Alcy Caldwell his wife of the one part and Anthony Bowser and Sarah his wife formerly Sarah Reeder, Elias Reeder, Jacob Reeder, and Furguson Fleming who is guardian for Amanda Reeder and Lewis Reeder children and heirs at law _Lewis Reeder dec.d and grand children of Henry Reeder deceased, and who is also guardian for William Henry Harrison and Elisa Reeder children of said Henry Reeder, deceased, of the other part. Whereas controversies have arisen about the last will and testament of said Henry Reeder deceased, it is agreed by and between the said Alexander Caldwell and Alcy his wife who was the wife of the said Henry Reeder, of the first part and the said parties of the second part so far as they are concerned to consider the said last will of the said Henry Reeder to be of no force, and they agree to divide the estate of the said Henry Reeder, both real and personal in the same manner as though he had died intestate, that is giving to the said Alcy Reeder one third part of the real estate, and one third part of the personal property in the same way as she would have held the same had the said Henry Reeder died intestate and the balance to the children and grand children of said Henry Reeder as the law would distribute the same had he died intestate in manner aforesaid: In testimony whereof the parties aforesaid have hereunto set their hands, and seals, this the day and year aforesaid.

Anna Emilie Pettersen1

F, #1650, b. 10 September 1870, d. 15 April 1961

Family: Niels Jorgensen (b. 19 June 1869, d. 1 February 1952)

  • Note
Anna's last years were spent in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Carl and Camilla Tvedt. With them she made a trip to visit relatives and old friends in Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. She especially enjoyed "beautiful Wisconsin" on the trip there to visit her sister-in-law, Marie Slocum and the Slocum families there. It impressed her that natural rain fall was sufficient for growth in the Middle West and that it was not necessary to continually lug a water hose around.
