His obituary was published in September 2006 in Nebraska, United States. Francis Dwain Walker, son of Cyrus and Martha Loghry Walker, was born at the farm home in Fillmore county on November 27, 1921. He passed away on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at the Bryan/LGH East medical Center in Lincoln at the age of 84 years, nine months and six days. He was one of five children in the family.
Francis attended School District No. 7 to the eighth grade, and then District 75 High School and graduated with the class of 1939.
He went to Oklahoma several summers following the wheat harvest back. The first fall he harvested in Boone, Iowa, west of Ames. The following fall he went to Wayne County to help with the fall harvest. He went to work for Lauber Seed Farms in 1941. They also had a seed store in York at that time.
Francis entered the service on October 8, 1942, and was sent to Hawaii for six weeks basic training. He was assigned to the 160 Infantry 40th Division in the southwest Pacific. After the Philippine Island Campaign, his unit was provided with amphibious training in preparation for the final strike in Japan. President Truman ordered the bombs dropped on Japan, which saved countless American lives. His division was then sent to Korea to get the Japanese out of the hills and sent them home.
After three years without a furlough and 85 points service time, he returned to the states and was honorably discharged on November 27, 1945, with the rank of Staff Sergeant on his 25th birthday. Francis returned home and to his employment at Lauber Seed Farms.
In October 1946, he was married to Maxine Franzen and to them three children were born'97Dwain, Alicia and Randal. Maxine passed away at the early age of 32, giving her little time to see the three children grow up. Francis married Shirley Robinson in February of 1958, and to them two children were born'97Mark and Brenda.
Francis continued to work at Lauber Seed Farm for 60-plus years, helping to produce hybrid seed corn and was dedicated to the growth of the company. He then retired and moved with his family into town.
Francis, better known as Cy, was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion where he held several offices, including commander for two terms.
Cy loved to read and enjoyed spending time with his friends at the coffee shop. He was a loving husband and devoted father.
Francis was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Maxine, sisters, Pearl McDonald and Carmen Schropfer, brother, Ray Walker and grandson Michael Rhodes.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children Dwain and wife Linda; Alicia Rhodes; Randal and wife, Kathy, Mark and wife Brenda, Brenda and Chris Armknecht, sister Dorothy Serk; grandchildren, Stephanie Walker, Rich Rhodes, Tim Rhodes, Brian Rhodes, Ron Walker, Chad Walker, Lori Nunnenkamp, Andrea Bolte, Amanda Walker, Tyler Walker, Makenzy Walker and Tyler Armknecht, 12 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and many friends who will miss him.
Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church on Thursday, September 7, with Rev. Ron Harris officiating.
Susan Kleinschmidt accompanied Delwin Myers who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art."
Casket bearers were members of the Geneva V.F.W. Samuel J. Marsh Post No. 7102.
Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery.
