Wesley Earl Loghry was born on 12 August 1924 in Washington Township, Taylor, Iowa, United States, Wesley always claimed his birthday was on the 12th and not the 13th as the amended birth certificate shows. Story
    1942
June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, is considered the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe. On this day in history, Allied troops (approximately 156,000) invaded Western Europe, completely overwhelming the German forces. Through research, I found out my father was at Normandy on D-Day. While my father served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he never talked about his experiences or where he had been. Now I wished I had bothered asking him about them.

Wesley enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 26 Aug 1942, a couple weeks after he turned 18 His address at the time of his enlistment was in Des Moines at 3317 S.E. 5th Street, the home of his brother Estell's in-laws, the Youngs.

He was stationed at The Naval Training Station Great Lakes, which is located near the city of North Chicago, Lake County, Illinois. By the end of 1942, 75,000 recruits were on base there. During World War II, Great Lakes supplied about a million men, just over a third of all personnel who served in the U.S. Navy.

By 27 Oct 1942, two short months after enlisting, Wesley is on Board the USS LST 383 when it was commissioned. He continues to show up in the U.S. World War II Navy Muster Rolls, 1938-1949 on the LST 383 until 20 Nov 1944, a period of 25 months. The LST 383 was a tank landing ship that was commissioned as previously stated on 27 Oct 1942. During World War II USS LST-383 was assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater and participated in the following campaigns: Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaigns, including Sicilian occupation, 9 to 15 Jul 1943; Salerno landings, 9 to 21 Sep 1943; Anzio-Nettuno advanced landings, 22 Jan to 1 Mar 1944; and Invasion of Normandy, 6 to 25 Jun 1944. NavSource Online: Amphibious Photo Archive has a photo of the LST 383 high and dry on the beach at Normandy Jun 1944. http://www.navsource.org/archives/10/16/160383.htm. The LST 383 was decommissioned and transferred to the United Kingdom on 20 Nov 1944. It appears that my father served on the LST for the entire time it was in service for the U.S. Navy. He continued to appear on the MUSTER ROL OF THE CREW of the U.S.S. LST-383 for the quarters ending 31 Mar 1944, 30 Jun 1944, 30 Sep 1944. These dates place him at the Anzio-Nettuno advanced landings (change of resting 1 Mar 1944) and Invasion of Normandy 6-25 Jun 6-25 1944.

On 20 Nov 1944, the USS LST 383 was decommissioned and transferred to the United Kingdom and commissioned into the Royal Navy as HM-LST-383 and participated in the Malaya Invasion. The United Kingdom didn't keep it very long, either, transferring and selling it to the Netherlands East Indies Maritime Customs on 10 Jun 1946. The USS LST-383 earned four battle stars for World War II service.

Further research showed Wesley was transferred to the U.S.S. Wyoming for the month ending 31 May 1945, date of sailing from NOB, Norfolk, VA to ATB, Little Creek, VA. He still is on the U.S.S. Wyoming on the Report of changes for the month ending 30 Apr 1945 as received on 22 Apr 1945 from ATB, Little Creek VA. The last record I have been able to find shows him on the USS LSM-R 504's Report of Changes on 11 Jun 1945 as received.

    Story
    1941
(The following are excerpts from "The Pacific Odyssey of Capt. William H. Daly and the 147th Field Artillery Regiment, 1941-1946).

[Bob's military service began on 25 November 1940; the 147th Field Artillery Regiment's First Battalion mobilized on 25 November 1940 for a year of training at Fort Ord, California.]

In September (1941), as their year of active duty neared completion, the South Dakotans received word that their term of service was being extended by eighteen months. In October came the news that the 147th would be sent to the Philippine Islands. Regular army officers who had served there soon arrived to lecture on conditions in the islands. They painted an appealing picture, advising the artillerymen to take along fishing tackle, golf clubs, and shotguns, as much sport was to be had. (p. 103)

On 22 November 1941, the 147th Field Artillery Regiment boarded the United States Army transport Willard A. Holbrook in San Francisco and set sail for overseas.... For Daly and most of the other soldiers aboard the Holbrook, nearly four years would elapse before then returned to the United States. (p. 104)

After stopping briefly in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the Holbrook sailed on 30 November in a convoy of nine ships. [Pearl Harbor was bombed on 7 December 1941, one week later.] (p. 104)

The 147th spent Christmas ashore in Brisbane and on 28 December reboarded the Holbrook to sail north inside Australia's Great Barrier Reef under Pensacola escort. Daly and his companions hoped that Manila was no longer the Holbrook's destination, for the war news made the likelihood of reaching the Philippine Islands safely seem remote. (p. 104)

When the transport and its escorts arrived at Darwin, Australia, at dawn on 6 January, the regiment was ordered to disembark. By the time the travel-weary troops established a camp ashore on 13 January, the Holbrook had been their home for fifty-four days--but it had seemed much longer. The camp of the 147th, located in the "bush" some fifteen miles inland from Darwin, had a ceremonious beginning.... the 147th F. A. were [among] the first American troops to ever set foot in Australia, so we are all a part of quite an historical event. (pp. 104-105)

By the time the 147th arrived in Darwin, the military situation in the Pacific theater had deteriorated further.

The 147th remained in defensive positions near Darwin for six months, expecting to engage Japanese invasion forces at any time. The invasion never materialized, but on the morning of 19 February 1942, Japanese carrier-based aircraft did launch a major raid on Darwin.... "We first noticed the planes about 10:30 A.M.. At first we thought they were U. S. air reinforcements but they were flying unusually high, and they were silvery, glinting in the sunlight. They were too high for the naked eye to see any insignia...The first 3 flights of 9 bombers each circled around to the south of us." Daly eventually counted about seventy-five bombers, some of which passed overhead en route to Darwin. "Then in the distance," he continued, "we began to hear explosions, the sharp crack of ack-ack guns, the dull ground-shaking boom of the exploding bombs and then we began to realize that this was really it, our first air raid. Now we could see the ack-ack bursting in the air, to leave little puffs of smoke to draft lazily." .... (p. 106)

In the following weeks, the Japanese hit Darwin with nine more daylight air aids. (p. 108)

Darwin suffered several more daylight raids in the weeks that followed, including the raid of 25 April, which resulted in the first battle casualties for the 147th. One officer was killed and another fatally wounded when bomb fragments struck the command car they were driving near Darwin's RAAF Field. (pp. 108-109)

By the spring of 1942, the threat of a Japanese invasion of Australia had passed as a result of American victories at the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway Island. With an entire Australian division now in the Northern Territory, and on 29 June the regiment began a two-thousand-mile trek southward to Ballarat on Australia's southeastern coast. Traveling first by truck convoy over the Great North Road to Alice Springs, the regiment reached its destination by trail on 8 July. The 147th spent the next three months in Ballarat, where it rested, reequipped, and rearmed, turning in its World War I-vintage 75mm guns for 105mm howitzers. (p. 109)

In October 1942, the 147th was assigned to the First Corps of the United States Sixth Army and ordered to Camp Cable, thirty-five miles from Brisbane. The regiment thus completed a circle tour of eastern Australia in ten months. (pp. 109-110)

The 147th Field Artillery Battalion remained on Woodlark and Kiriwina islands until April 1944, when it moved to Finschhafen, New Guinea, to spend the next six weeks preparing for its first combat operation. On 11 May 1944, the battalion became part of the 158th Infantry Regiment of the Arizona National Guard. The 147th remained a part of this combat team for the rest of World War II, establishing a good working relationship with the Arizona guardsmen. (pp. 113-115)

Marriage License | Ira Harrison Butler
2 March 1940 | Polk, Iowa, United States
Ira and Anna obtained a marriage license on 2 March 1940 in Polk, Iowa, United States.
Although Anna Mae Rouse and Ira H. Butler obtained a marriage license on 2 Mar 1940 in Polk County, Iowa, no proof has been found that it was ever filed. They were found in the 1940 Census listed as husband and wife and on Ira's 1942 World War II Draft Registration he listed Anna May Butler as his wife and the person who would know where he was. But his death certificate stated he was divorced and his obituary, found 21 Oct 1946 in the Des Moines Register (page 9) stated he was survived by one daughter, one sister, one half-sister, one half-brother, and two grandchildren but no mention of a wife, leaving the question of whether they were ever married. A Card of Thanks was published in the Des Moines Register on 23 Oct 1946 (page 19) by the Wayne Cummings family (his daughter's family) thanking neighbors, friends, and relatives for their acts of love and sympathy during the recent loss of their beloved father, Ira H. Butler did not include mention of a wife. It appears that they lived together for at least two years between 1940-1942, but the question of was it an actual marriage or more of a common-law marriage remains. Anna's daughter Gladys, when questioned about this, stated she didn't think they ever actually married.

  • Story
William "Bill" Thornton was the first-born son of Roy Clinton Thornton and Anna Mae Rouse and was a proud union leader, helping to secure better wages and conditions. From his father's obituary, we know that in January 1937, as a 23-year-old man, he had a WPA job. WPA stood for "Works Progress Administration." This was the largest and most ambitious American New Deal agency, employing millions of unemployed individuals, mostly unskilled men, to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. Almost every community in the U.S. had a new park, bridge, or school constructed by the agency. At its peak in 1938, it provided jobs for three million unemployed men and women, and between 1935 and 1943, the WPA provided almost eight million jobs.

In 1940 he was living in the household of his mother and his stepfather, Ira Butler. He was listed as a "new worker," having worked 39 weeks in 1940. No information was provided on where he was working. I have not been able to find any information on military service. He must have gone to work soon after at Firestone Tire in Des Moines. I have been told he helped secure a job for this writer's father, Wesley E. Loghry, there sometime in the mid to later 1940s. Bill never married and in 1954 he purchased a home at 2800 East 25th in Des Moines for him and his mother.

While employed at Firestone, he became very involved in Local 310 URWA. At the time of his death, almost 1,000 miles away in Winchester, Virginia 400 workers at the O'Sullivan Rubber Company voted to strike on May 13, 1956, to preserve their union. Bill was well known throughout Iowa and the International Union for his outstanding work as Local 310's special O'Sullivan representative.

Bill died two days before Thanksgiving of a heart attack while taking a bath. An article titled "Death Claims Three Outstanding Labor Representatives This Week" in the December 6, 1957, edition of "The Iowa Federationist," detailed two other active unionists, dying within days of Bill, all three of them of heart attacks. The Rev. Roy H. Mills, pastor of Easton Place Methodist church and Chaplain of the Polk County Labor council died of a heart attack Thanksgiving afternoon, November 28. Rev. Mills suffered a heart attack at his home. Rev. Mr. Mills was known as the man behind the movement to bring labor and religion together in Des Moines. Robert J. Myers died of a heart attack on Sunday, November 31 at Mercy Hospital. He was the business representative of district No. 118 of the International Association of Machinists and had been past president of the Solar Aircraft Lodge. He was a delegate to the Polk County Labor council.

What is interesting (and perhaps suspicious) was that all union leaders (1) died of heart attacks (2) within five days of each other and (3) all three had connections to the Polk County Labor council.

Right below the story about death claiming the three outstanding labor representatives was a story titled "O'Sullivan Workers Get turkey Dinners Despite 18-Month Strike." Local AFL-CIO unions in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. contributed the complete turkey dinners and it took over six hours to distribute the food donations. The article stated that contributions from the Retail Clerks alone amounted to 500 full shopping bags of groceries--two for every family.

William Thornton, the unionist who made a national name for himself by covering more than 100 Iowa cities and towns on the O'Sullivan boycott died unexpectedly, Nov. 26.

Brother Thornton acquired the nickname "Tornado" at the URW international headquarters for his extraordinary, whirlwind-like boycott coverage of Iowa unions and shoe repair shops. A week before his death he had made another check of the state to see if the boycott was still effective.

Thornton had been a board member of Firestone URW Local 310 since 1954, and his friends in Des Moines and throughout the country deeply mourn his passing.

Bill Thornton lived in the best tradition of American trade unionism. A quiet, dedicated, good-natured individual, he died as he had lived--in the service of his fellow man.

    6 December 1957 | Iowa, United States
[He/She] was mentioned in a news article, on 6 December 1957, in Iowa, United States.
Local 310 URWA suffered a severe loss in the sudden death of William Thornton on November 26. "Bill" had been a member of the local since its organization in October, 1945. He served the local union in several capacities, including steward, convention delegate, executive board member and special representative. His services as board member will be hard to replace, as Bill brought a keen insight into the problems that were part of board deliberations.

He was best known throughout Iowa and the International Union for his outstanding work as Local 310's special O'Sullivan representative. On this special assignment Bill made many more friends among shoe repairmen and Union representatives. The job he did brought him recognition by the International Union. His complete report on the contacts he made was used by the International as a model for reports from other representatives.

Bill died of a heart attack at the age of 44. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Anna M. Thornton; four brothers Carl, Kenneth, and Russell of Des Moines, and Virgil of Louisville, Kentucky; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Loghry and Mrs. Alta Johnson, both of Des Moines.

Bill served as a delegate from Local 310 to the Polk County Labor council and had one of the best attendance records of any delegate. His friends, numbering in the hundreds, were all deeply shocked by his sudden death and extended their sympathy to his family.

One of the finest tributes paid Bill was by a fellow worker who said, "I made more people mad at me in one night than Bill did in his whole life."

Bill was a member of the East Gate Masonic Lodge No. 630. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Harry L. Herlein of the Miller Evangelical United Brethren church. East Gate Lodge and Ascalon Chapter No. 139 conducted the masonic funeral service.

He resided at 4400 block on E. 29th St. on 4 December 1939 in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa, United States. The family home, which burned at 6:30 p.m., was a block outside the city limits. Mr. Thornton, a work projects administration worker, with his wife and two daughters, Eileen JOy, 23 months old, and Norma Jean, 3 months old, were away from home when the fire broke out. Neighbors were unsuccessful in an atempt to extinguish the blaze. The Thornton family, which had spent the afternoon at the home of Mr. Thornton's mother, arrived home just in time to see their dwelling, a one-room cottage, collapse in the flames.

Neighbors had discovered the fire and were making efforts to check its spread when heat and sparks caused a gasoline pressure cooking store to explode. The explosion blocked further attempts to save th house."
