Story
He arrived in Saybrook as a single man around 1665 and established himself on a farm. In May 1669, Connecticut's Colonial Records document his attainment of freeman status. Some writers have expressed uncertainty about his ancestry, his origins before Saybrook, and his spouse (as per "The Cogswells in America"). However, it's highly likely that he was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, was the son of John Cogswell (who perished on a return voyage from London in 1635), and married Susanna Haven from Lyme, Connecticut. Note that Lyme was part of Saybrook until 1667.
