Biography

  • Birth: William French was born between 1605 and 1606 in Halstead, Essex, EnglandBGO.4

  • Death: He died on 20 November 1681 in Billerica, Middlesex, Province of Massachusetts Bay, British Colonial AmericaBGO.1,3,9,10,11
  • Story:
William French was an immigrant, arriving aboard the "Defence," Edward Bostock, Master, which left England after 18 July 1635 and arrived in Boston on 8 October 1635. He came to New England with his wife Elizabeth and four children: Francis age 10, Elizabeth 6, Mary 2 and 1/2, and John 5 months. Along with his family, he came to America with rev. Thomas Shepard and his brother Samuel Roger Harlakrnden and John and Joseph Cook. The child John was baptized on the families arrival at New Towne (Cambridge) by the Rev. Thomas Hooker, a fellow passenger, whose name does not appear on the shipping list.

While in Cambridge, other children were born this this couple: Sarah, Jacob, two Hannahs, a Samuel who died young, and a second Samuel.

William French was made a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony on the 3rd of March 1636, and a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1638. His home in Cambridge was on what is now the westerly side of Dunster Street about midway between Harvard Square and Mt. Auburn Street. He bought this property in 1639 and sold it to William Barrett 10 June 1656.

William first settled in Cambridge. The settlement of Billerica (Shawshin) was begun about 1653 and William French was one of the first proprietors. The town was incorporated in 1655 and in the printed account of the celebration of the two hundredth anniversary it is stated (giving as reference Rec. Massachusetts vol. iv, pt. 2, p. 383) that in 1659 Lt. French, for Billerica and Chelmsford, was empowered to join in marriage within those towns or limits such persons as shall desire the same, being authorized by law. In March 1659/60, when the first selectmen (townsmen were the old name) were chosen, he was one of the five. As Lieutenant in the local militia he did garrison duty during King Philip's war. Later he would become a Captain.

Evidence of William activity in the cause of Indian instruction is found in a a letter to a "godly friend in England," which was published in London in the famous tract, "Strength Out of Weakness," and later republished in the Massachusetts Historical Society Collection in which he gave a detailed account of the testimony of an Indian convert.

William French was the brother of John French 1637, Cambride. On 2 Apr 1650, the "Court granted W[illia]m French right and power of administration upon the estate of his brother John French deceased, and do confirm and allow of his disposal of the children."

Richard French, who appeared in Cambridge by 1647 was probably related to William and John in some way. He also obtained land in Billerica, and he named a son Samuel, as did William French. Samuel French, son of Richard and Martha, born at Cambridge 13 Jul 1653, is apparently the man of that name who married at Chelmsford on 28 Dec 1682 Sarah Cummings.3,7,12,13
  • Story:
William French held the office of Deputy from Billerica to Massachusetts Bay General Court, 19 Dec 1660, 27 May 1663, 3 Aug 1664.

Empowered to marry others in Billerica and Chelmsford, 18 Oct 1659, 15 May 1667 (Billerica only).

    Petit jury, 3 Dec 1639.

Admitted to Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, 1638.

Sergeant, 276 Sep 1642. Lieutenant, nominated 1 Oct 1645 and confirmed 26 May 1647. His inventory included an "old musket and gun barrel" valued at 12s.14
  • Note: Not the son of Thomas French of Halstead, Essex, England. That Thomas French did have a William French born in 1603, but he has been proven to be a William French who died in England and is not our immigrant. See NEHGR 65:284-86 and "The Great Migration", 2001, Vol 2, pp 588-593, by Anderson, Sanborn, and Sanborn.15
  • Alt. Birth: He has conflicting birth information of 15 March 1603 and Halstead, Essex, EnglandBGO.1,3,5
  • Christening: William French was christened on 6 April 1606 in Halstead, Essex, EnglandBGO.4
  • Residence: He had a residence on 8 February 1635 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United StatesBGO.

Appeared in list of "those men who have houses in the town." On 6 Feb 1636, he was granted two acres of land. In 1639 William French held two parcels of land "bought of Mr. Richard Champnes, one dwelling house and garden"; and "given by the town two acres of land in the New West Field." By 1639 he had sold to John Sill "one house with garden and bacside in the town."

In the Cambridge land inventory of 6 Sep 1642, William French held four parcels "in the town one dwelling house with about half a rood of ground"; "in the New West Field two acres"; on the south side of Charles Rier, eight acres more or less being the seventh lot in the lower division of lots"; and "in the upper division of those lots eight acres more or less being the three and fiftieth lot there."16
  • Emigration: He emigrated aboard the "Defence" after 18 July 1635 from Middlesex, EnglandBGO. He arrived in Boston on 8 Oct 1635.17
  • Residence: He had a residence in January 1658 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United StatesBGO. A list of Cambridge church members included William French and Elizabeth his wife, both members in full communion, their children Elizabeth now Elliot and now joined at Dedham; Mary baptized inEngland between two an three years old at her father's joining; John baptized by Mr. Hooker in Cambridge; Sarah, Jacob, Hannah, born and baptized in this Church.14
  • Will: He signed a will on 5 June 1679 in Billerica, Middlesex, Province of Massachusetts Bay, British Colonial AmericaBGO. In the will was proved 20 December 1681, "W[illia]m French of Billerica, aged about seventy & six years," declared that "I have already given to all my children that have already married their portions, I only add to them as followeth: to the eldest son of John French, to W[illia]m the son of Jacob French, to Elizabeth daughter [of] Richard Ellis, to Jonathan the son of Jonathan Hides, to the eldest daughter of Jonathan Peake, to Marah the daughter of John Brackett, which are all my grandchildren, to each person as foresaid twenty shillings"; residue to "my beloved wife, & to those children born to me by her, to be divided to each at the discretion of our honored county court after my decease"; "my beloved wife and my son Jaob French" executors; at the time of probate, there was "allowed to the [illegible] of the children £6 13s. 4d., to the widow 1/3 the remainder, to the widow the remainder 23 equally to be let out by Lt. Jonath[an] Danforth, Joseph Thompson and Josiah Convarse to each his part and the widow to have the benefit of the children's portion for the bringing up and education until they come of age to choose their guardians."

The inventory of the estate of "Lt. W[illia]m French of Billerica who deceased 20 November 1681 being his 78 year of his age," taken 6 December 1681, totalled £231 12s. 10d. (against which were debts of about £25), of which £104 was real estate: "house & barn, homestead, meadows & outlands," £104; presented 8 December 1681 by "Mary French executrix to the estate of Lt French her deceased husband." The value of the estate £231) would be roughly $17,525 in 2020.11

Francis French1

M, #5383, b. 5 April 1625, d. 14 February 1681

Parents

Family: Lydia Bonnell (d. 1 April 1708)

Biography

  • Birth: Francis French was born on 5 April 1625 in Middlesex, EnglandBGO.1,2,3
  • Marriage: He and Lydia Bonnell were married on 10 April 1661.2
  • Death: He died on 14 February 1681, at age 55.4,2
  • Note: Francis' birth is based on his age of 10 in 1635. There is no further record. It is possible he may not have been a child of this couple as William French would have been barely twenty at the time of birth of Francis, which is not impossible but younger than the norm for this period of time. According to l Website of the Surname Frech (http://www.frenchfamilyassoc.com/FFA/ : accessed 16 Feb 2020), Williiam French, 1606, Francis was William's youngest brother by his father William French and Elizabeth Symmes.

William French of The Leete and Elizabeth French had son Francis in 1625. Therefore, Francis French was not the son nor nephew of William French the emmigrant, but he was his youngest brother by a different mother. This shows from later reports why he was very close to him in a bloodline, but did not give to him in his will as he was not one of his childen. He took him to New England with him on the ship Defence probably because both of Francis' parents had died.
