• Story:
  Family traditions are that in 1660 Captain John Kittredge fled from England to American. He was in charge of a ship which plied from England to some foreign ports. He had access to medical documents and as he was of a surgical turn of mind, he studied them carefully and began experimenting by breaking animal limbs and then setting them to see how fast he could get them to heal. One of his workers broke an arm and the Captain set it. Soon after this, another man broke a leg and asked the Captain to set it for him. Being successful at setting broken bones, it became known to the authorities, and as laws were very stringent that no one practice without a medical diploma, it became necessary for him to flee the country and come to America, where he settled in Billerica, Massachusetts.
  
  Early American tradition speaks of the first John Kittredge coming to this country with his mother, and as being one "on whom the healing art had descended through many generations."
  
  He received a grant of land of five acres in Billerica on 25 Sep 1660. That part of Billerica where John Kittredge's descendents located was incorporated into the town of Tewksbury on 23 December 1734. Among the forty- six families from Billerica taken into the new town, there were eleven by the name of Kittredge.⁶
