  She is survived by her husband, Rupert Sailor of Taft; her mother, Mabel Jorgenson of Vermillion, S.D.; three brothers, Jim Jorgenson of Denver, Robert Jorgenson of Des Moines and Daryl Jorgenson of Vermillion; a sister, Mrs. Willard Peterson of Vermillion; a step-son Gary Sailor of Taft; and two step-daughters, Patricia Hollingsworth of Taft and Nancy Sailor of Mountain View.
  
  Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Erickson and Brown chapel in Taft. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery, Taft.¹²

• Obituary: Her obituary was published on 20 December 2017 in Vermillion, Clay, South Dakota, United StatesBGO. Evelyn Peterson, a life-long resident of Vermillion, died on December 16, 2017, at age 99, following a short illness. At the time of her death, she was living in the Sanford Vermillion Care Center.
  
  Evelyn was the second oldest of five children born to Jens and Mabel Jorgenson. Her three brothers and one sister preceded her in death. Her passing represents the end of a generation of her family. Evelyn was the magnet that drew family to Vermillion at least once a year to celebrate and honor her. Plans for her 100th birthday celebration were underway.
  
  Evelyn graduated from Vermillion High School and then started her career of service in the federal government, working in the local ASCS office. She worked in that office until her retirement over 40 years ago. It was a rare outing with Evelyn that she didn't meet someone who knew her and greeted her with the same cheerfulness and kindness with which she greeted everyone.
  
  She married the love of her life, Willard Peterson, following his service to the country during World War II. The Army sent Willard to the South Pacific but during that conflict, communications with home were infrequent, if at all. Evelyn waited and worked in Vermillion, not knowing where he was and when he would return. Of course, he did return and they were married over 56 years until his death in 2004.
  
  Following her retirement, she focused her attention on making sure her mother and next-door neighbor stayed safe and healthy in her own house, reflecting her belief in remaining independent throughout life. Trinity Lutheran Church always played a large role in her life and she gave uncountable hours in service to the church and her God. She was a member of Trinity for 99 of the 125 years of its existence. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Trinity.
  
  She had many gifts to share. She enjoyed knitting and Hardanger work. She loved watching the Vikings games. She rarely missed a Strollers show at USD. On top of everything, she was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. Uffda!!
  
  Eventually, she realized that she would be safer at the Care Center and made the decision to live there. She lived there for the last five years, always enjoying visits from the many friends she had in Vermillion and family who came from all over the country to see her. Evelyn did adapt to the times and obtained an e-mail address so that everyone could stay in touch with her when they weren't visiting.
  
  Evelyn's family would like to express appreciation to the many people who so gently and respectfully took care of her throughout her last years, including the staff at the Sanford Vermillion Care Center which allowed her to live her life as she wished; her hairdresser, Cheryl Girard, who often drove her to the salon and back home after her weekly visit was completed; her friends Dwight and Mary Berglin who visited her frequently; and the folks at Evie's favorite afternoon coffee spot, Dairy Queen, who knew just what to serve her when she walked in.
  
  Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Willard, and her parents, Jens and Mabel Jorgenson, and her siblings, Ardis, Robert, Daryl and James.
  
  Evelyn was blessed with the friendship of Mary Ann Peterson who helped Evelyn accomplish her life goals, never leaving her side and becoming as close as a sister. Evelyn also leaves nieces and nephews and their children, who all will remember her as Aunt Evie, a very special and enduring person.
