Dorothy E. Welch, 93, of Sioux City, Iowa, formerly of Akron, Iowa passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Countryside Senior Living in Sioux City. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City. Reverend Craig Collison and Deacon Mark Wyant will celebrate Mass. Visitation with the family present will be after 5:30 p.m. Friday, January 3, 2014, with a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at the church. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Dorothy Edith Johnson was born August 28, 1920 in Elk Point, South Dakota, the daughter of Ole and Johanna (Hanson) Johnson. She was raised and attended school in Elk Point. She was united in marriage to Michael Welch on August 5, 1938 in Beresford, South Dakota. They farmed east of Westfield, Iowa on the Welch farm for several years where Dorothy was a homemaker for her family. After retiring, they moved to Akron. Mike passed away in 1979. Dorothy continued to live in Akron until moving to Sioux City a few years ago. While in Akron, Dorothy was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. After moving to Sioux City, she became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Through the years, she enjoyed reading and embroidering. But most of all, she loved the times spent with her family. She will be greatly missed. Survivors include her children: Theresa (Jack) Carey of Arvada, CO; Louis (Beverly) Welch of Sioux City; Ruth (Bill) Hinton of Owatonna, MN; Kathleen (Gordon) vonAhsen of Harlan, IA; Marleen Wessling of Urbandale, IA; Lunette Welch of Owatonna, MN; and Mike (Cleo) Welch of Storm Lake, IA; 18 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; 2 step granddaughters; 1 step great great grandson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mike; her sons: Thomas and Larry; a daughter in law: Mary Welch; a son in law: Ivan Wessling; 2 great grandsons: Benjamin Welch and one in infancy; 4 sisters; and 6 brothers.
