  Elmer Garland Johnston was born 19 Jul 1918 in Ringgold County, Iowa to Otis Mayfield (Jake) and Minnie Beulah (Carter) Johnston and departed this life on Saturday, 20 Sep 2014 in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 96 years, two months and one day.
  
  The Johnston family moved to a homestead in Wyoming where he attended school. In 1934 he returned to Iowa to the family farm. He and his brother Otis rode back to Iowa in a boxcar with the cattle and household possessions.
  
  In Iowa he farmed with his family and worked at a sawmill before going to Texas to work in the rice fields. He returned to Iowa where he married Edna Bowen on 11 Dec 1939 in Bethany Mo. Elmer and Edna began their married life on a farm near Grand River, Iowa, before moving to the family farm north of Martinsville, Mo., where they raised their family of eight children, Karen, Leroy, Larry, Shirley, Eldon, Marilyn, Carolyn and Betty. Elmer was a full time farmer as well as serving as an elected assessor of Dallas Township, he worked part time at a rock quarry, and was employed at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa.
  
  In 1972 Elmer and Edna sold the farm and moved to Blythedale, Mo., where Elmer continued to work at Graceland College, retiring in 1980. After retiring he had many hobbies including, traveling to see family and friends, polishing rocks, woodworking, gardening, walking, family history, latchhook rugs and later he tackled technology including the computer and iPad that he used to write poems and stories.
  
  In 1990 they sold the house at Blythedale and moved to an apartment in Bethany, where he continued some of his hobbies. He and Edna moved to Carlisle, Iowa in 1997 to be closer to family. As his health declined they moved to Des Moines in 2004, first at Wakonda Manor and later Walden Point.
  
  He was a family man who loved researching his ancestors, while enjoying visits with all his family and friends; family reunions and celebrations were the highlight of his life. In 2010 he and Edna self-published a book of poems and memories called "Down Memory Lane."
  
  Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Alta, Lola and Emma; brothers, Otis and Lloyd; two sons, Leroy and Larry' great granddaughter, Stefany Hamilton; son-law, Leonard Hamilton, granddaughter Kathy Hatfield.
  
  Elmer is survived by wife of 74 years, Edna of the home; daughters, Karen Hamilton of Leon, Iowa, Shirley (Kenneth) Barton, of Des Moines, Iowa, Marilyn (Joe) Hodge of Cairo, Mo., Carolyn (Gary) Rebel of Des Moines, Iowa, Betty (Monte) Tschetter of Des Moines, Iowa; son, Eldon (Judy) Johnston of Silver Lake, Wisc., 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren with one due in November; 21 great-great grandchildren; two great-great-great grandchildren and sister, Dorothy (Harold) Huitt, Bethany, Mo.
  
  Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Robertson Funeral Home, Eagleville,Mo. Burial in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Blythedale, Mo. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:30 Thursday at the funeral home where friends may call after 9:00 a.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church of gallatin and/or Hospice of Central Iowa in care of Roberson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 46, Eagleville, MO 64442.²
